Going wrong direction!

Yahoo Message Number: 35207
I see all the other coaches are going south on I95! My next job is just south of Manchester NH regional airport.

What is best route from Richmond VA to Manchester NH?

What part of what highway should I avoid?

Hi Eric

My suggestion would be to drive south on I 95 until you see a sign that says "Welcome to Florida". Wait there till spring then reverse route.

Actually my preference would be to avoid about all of I 95 north of you. I just don't like DC and NY on that road. I would take almost any road to the north west (US Rt 17 NW out of Fred'sburg, VA over to I 66 works good) and turn North on I 81 then I 84 thru CT. This is very nice road with much less traffic but will add around 100 miles and around an hour or so to your trip. Being retired and without schedules it's worth it to me. I just don't like all that traffic.
Most folks would not want to spend that much time to avoid it.

Have a good trip and enjoy NH

Eric,

Having made the trip (to Maine) from points South many times, I recommend from I-81 Scranton to Albany, NY and across Mass Turnpike. I will never take I-84 again. Too twisty and turny with short ramps and traffic jams. It is worth the extra distance.

Don,

When you are travelling in the Northeast you should purchase and an EZpass online to use for all the tolls. If you apply for the EZ-pass correctly and register it as a motorhome and not as a truck the tolls are the same as two passenger cars plus the toll is also discounted for using the EZ Pass. Your $27.00 toll bill would have been less than $8.00 plus you don't have to wait in line to pay.

Bob G.,

Your post was saved for my trip out. I will use it to get out of here.
This job was to be done Christmas eve and include 30 days of routine annual electric power plant maintenance.
Power plant had major failure of 230 million watt turbine engine yesterday, so work is expected to extend past Christmas.
I knew I had avoided NYC going north to CT coast last millennium, but did not remember my old route. Had I had your post before my trip from NC to NH, the trip would have been more pleasant and avoided repeated equipment damages.

DeLorme SA 2008 routed me up I95 all the way but after entering NJ, SA started

to change the route. Turnpikes, Parkways & city streets became parts of the route. Do Not Trust DeLorme Street Atlas 2008. Do not use it live. Plan the route, then drive the plan, not the green arrow to hell.
Parkways in NYC area are meant for cars or other low vehicles. DeLorme did not give me any clues, just changed route onto a Parkway. Parkway curb lanes often have bridge clearances less than 10'. Losses were only 1 air horn & 2 vent covers.

One NJ turnpike truck stop had 180 degree turn to pump islands & 180 degree turn after islands. This thoughtless fool followed the trucks, turned 180 & broke tow bar.

Friendly Beaver Campground is only place open all year. It is 23 miles of NH roads from work location just south of Manchester NH airport. FBC is about 2 miles west of New Boston. First quarter mile is up a full throttle 16 M/H hill. That hill was second thrill. First thrill was hitting a utility cable over New Bedford Road east of New Boston.
Both AC covers survived the utility cable.
I should have posted my travel question at least a day before I knew of the trip. As it is, repairs will be less than $500 and I have a much appreciated route our of here.

Andy,

Thanks for the expected suggestion of FL till better weather. Had the work order been approved, I would again be south of Miami in November & December. Maybe that work will be approved after the NASCAR season traffic ends. Having been south of Miami last November & December has not improved my attitude in NH!

Thanks for all the replies.
