Entry door Latch Failure

We were passing trucks in left lane at 65mph when my front entry door released and would have opened if not for quick action by my navigator. (dead bolt not locked because would not enter the receiver but door latch was locked).

Once stopped and with the door open, I could not close the door as the two pins on the door edge would not match up with the door latch receiver.

Removed the pins and drove home with door wired shut.
What is the secret to realigning the two pins to slide into the door frame latch receiver?

Hi Dean,

I have a Bargman Lock, I replaced the bolts two years ago with AN flat head type aircraft bolts and F5000-3 floating nut plates. I had to drill a 1/2 inch hole between the stricker plate holes on the door frame to insert the nut plates onto the backside of the door frame. These materials may be purchased from Aircraft Spruce - they have a web site. This combination has stopped striker plate loosening and movement. I had the same problem as you have reported.
