Lyle - I meant to respond to your question about just downshifting to 5th gear, and leaving the Jake in 4th as the Default gear.
As I stated in my last post, I need to do more validation of what I think I've observed - as I may have made the wrong conclusion.
I only have 8K under my belt with this coach, and DP's in general, so still very much a rookie in DP's in general and this specific rig. Most of those miles were on a trip from San Diego up thru Teton's, Yellowstone, the pan handle of Idaho, and then we came all the way back down 395 picking it up just South of Spokane. So, lots of mountain grades in that short period of time.
I do downshift with the trans, without Jake, when I feel it is approriate. That is for getting ready to climb a grade, or to possibly hold a speed when going down a shallow grade. It was during this usage, that I felt the 5th (I was wrong to have posted 6th, it was an example, as 5th is what I would have asked for) as a Jake default gear would provide me more flexiblity. I became very used to reaching over by feel, and knowing which was Up/Down on the gear selector, and I do it by touch 90% + of the time. (I do find I need to look for the Jake switch still, and have to reach forward some from my normal driving position.).
I mentioned on an email to Don, that I have a trip up 395 and then some to the West on 80 over Donners pass coming up in July. I'll do some more review of what the Jake and Cruise are doing together as they are now. Then reflect upon if I want to pursue changing things...
I wanted to get back to you on the 5th, or 4th, or 3rd, etc. Gear change option only, while leaving the Jake default to 4th. As I had not responded to you on this. It was a valid question.

Best, and best to all too,
Smitty
