I go online to reset the receivers.  Easy.
Now that we full time we added affiliate feeds and get ABC, CBS, NBC etc from NY.  If we want "local" news from home we go online.

We still have the original TracStar dome. Had it worked on a couple of times by Dave at Sats2Go in Houston and he said it's still a good one.

Diane and Lonny, thank you so much for mentioning getting our "local" news from the online sites.  I have to say that's brilliant.  No worries about getting our tv stations while traveling that way.  We also have our original TracStar done, and it seems to  be going strong so far with no difficulties with DirecTv.

I have used DirecTV in my motorhome for 8 years. When you arrive at your destination, simply call DirecTV and change your service address (not billing address) to the address of your campground. Then ask them to re authorize your receivers, and - voila - you have the local stations for your current location. Repeat when you return to base and you are good to go.

You can change your service address as often as you like!

Phil,

I would sure like to know who you have talked to.  I have tried it 2 different times on this trip and has been unsuccessful to get them change anything.  I have turned in their required paperwork and it has been approved.  when I call them they said that they could not do the change.  So right now I'm stuck with west coast feed and I'm in the central time zone.  I talked to their "Specialist" and both time they are saying that they can not change my feed to where I'm at.
At least it working for some.

To clarify, there are two ways to go: pay extra for the east or west coast feeds, or, cancel the extra cost feed and make your campground address your service address each time you move. When I get the automated phone attendant and it asks me to describe what I need, I say "change service address" - and am immediately transferred to a rep, who changes the address no problem.
I should mention that I also use the receivers from my stick home when I travel.
I have NEVER had a rep even hesitate to change my service address. Perhaps the west coast feed prevents them from accommodating your request.

How often do you make the change of service address.  I'd have to change it every day or two on some of our trips?

You are correct - I change my DirecTV Service Address as often as every 2 or 3 days when I am traveling.

The only drawback to changing service address is all of your receivers go  to the new zip code. So, if you have a DVR at home set up to record your  favorite stuff it will not record anything on your home or usual stations.

Are you trying to change your service address or your remote feeds? They  will change service address, but not the east or west feeds.

Mikee,

I was in So Dakota last week and I tried to change my "Service Address" and all I got was that my guide lost channels from the west coast (wasn't getting them anyway) and nothing else changed.  My guide had my major channels (west coast) on 2,4.7, and 11.  Now my guide starts at channel 70 and those major channels are now in the 390's.

I tried a couple of days ago since we are now in northern Minn.  All I got from the "Tech" was we can't do that.

For those that this "Change of Service address" works... what do you get from it.  Is it just local channels added? or do you get all the major channels change also?

Right now I'm in a RV Park that has way too many trees and can not get a decent signal for the Sat.

If you have local channels at home in wasa wasa somewhere and you go to  teaa somewhere and change your service address you will lose your "home" locals  and gain the new address locals. Everything else stays the same.
But remember if you have a DVR at home it will not record local channels  because you changed your locals.

I used to have the east and west coast feeds but dropped them when they  raised the price a few years ago. Locals are becoming less and less important  due their being over 200 channels anyway.

Dave - We're still new to our DirecTV account in this coach. But the way I understand it, you currently can only get a West Coast or East Coast feed. Some long timers have been grandfathered in where they could obtain either feed, like Mikee used to be.

Also as I understand it, this is an FCC issue, not DirecTV.(?)

But, as pointed out, you can call or do online chat, to have your current Service Address changed. The DNS paper work you filled out, is what is used by the FCC to authorize DirecTV to change the local content providers. The buzz word Spot Beam is used quite a bit, but I kind of look at it as an upside down cone, sitting above the region that you have changed your service contract to. The point of the cone is at the satellite, the open end of the cone is all around you. Stay within the cone, and you can get all of the local content channels. Go outside of the cone, and 771 message when you look at those channels.

Why local content? We like to watch the current news and weather forecasts, and get a fill for the location we're in. Also, sometimes these local channels include ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. - and their content is on the current timezone that your in. While we were in Sioux Falls with Central Time Zone, we could record or watch shows two hours earlier then the West Coast Feed of these channels. It basically gives you more flexibility and options on when to watch or record a specific show. We find that we usually like to shave 15+ mins off of each hour program, and record and then fast forward thru the commercials. So regular shows that we enjoy, we DVR off of the West Coast feed. One other advantage that I've found so far, sports, the local content may show different teams playing then you would get off of the West Coast feed. So you might find a game that you can watch that would not be available to you on only West Cast feed.

Not all areas that you change your Service Address to will have local content. For example we're in the Moran, WY area, as we're splitting the next three weeks between Gros Ventre in the Tetons, and then inside Yellowstone at Madison Campground. Had the Service Address changed to Colter Bay's address, Moran, WY. And we are not getting any local content at all. May try later to change it to Jackson, WY and see what may show up. So far, I have not had any luck on locating a way to find out what local content is available in a region?

Sorry for being so long winded, and remember I'm a rookie on Spot Beams and DirecTV in general, so I may have the wrong conclusions in my perceptions shared above.

Best of luck to you,

Smitty

The only thing I can add to this, is I use the chat function from within my Direct TV account to change my service address. I also believe that the FCC will only let you have West OR East coast feeds, not both. I think you have this nailed, thanks.

I solve the DVR problem by taking it with me in the coach. That way I can still record programming as I like.

When I change my service address, the only thing that changes are my local channels.  All other programming remains intact. From what I am seeing on the forum, I am guessing that subscribing to DNS (east or west coast feeds) might cause an issue with obtaining local channels by changing your service address.  Might be worth a call to Tech Support (if you can suffer through the voice response system!)

No problems here changing my Service Address. Use the chat Function instead of calling.much quicker.

Dave;

When you encounter one of the usual idiots at the DirecTV call center, just ask to be transferred to the CTG (Customer Retention Group).  Just encountered the usual problem this morning when disputing a $135 charge because I had deactivated my coach receiver.  I did that because I had been paying them $6.95/month 365/24/7 for a receiver to be active so that I wouldn't lose my FCC waiver for the distant network channels (east and west).  Previously, I would simply call them and tell them to activate the DTN channels when I was moving across the country to save the hassle of having to call in to change service address many times during a 7-8 week trip (and usually getting an idiot in the call center who would tell me I couldn't do it.  Rules have changed (probably as a result of ATT merger) and FTC waiver is no longer "keepable" and it takes 10-14 days and a lot of hassle to activate it.
Now I have to call in to get locals, or think way ahead to file the FCC waiver.  Usual PITA to deal with them, but I never talk to the call center person who answers first...I always get transferred to CRG.  I've not heard of your "only west coast" feeds, but , if you have the FCC waiver on file, you can definitely get BOTH east and west (unless someone has promulgated a new "policy" that they can blame on someone else.
Sound like I hate DirecTV...yes indeed!  But, not much option other than cable in the park or over the air.

I have a Winegard Trav'ler. It has 4 outputs which supports the two inputs for my DVR, one for my bedroom TV, with one to spare.
