Coolant and Hydraulic hose

Yahoo Message Number: 103555
My 1997 Affinity is dry under coach. No leaks or drips. I am at 95000 miles and am considering starting to possibly replace all coolant hoses this winter. Next year at this time would replace all hydraulic hoses front to back of coach also. Am I worrying to much about this. Coach always stored when not in use. They are original, maybe a little soft. But then I think I could have a blowout on a new hose maybe just as easy. Should I think about coolant and hydraulic hoses as tires ? If so I am overdue on replacement.

Von, it's probably good to replace rubber hoses after ten years or so because they are mechanical products and they're being bent, heated, cooled, and thus probably wise to change them.  Both of course are rubber hoses.

Good question and cheap insurance policy.

Been dragging my feet on starting to replace all hoses since it is time consuming and costly. Wasn't sure if I should look at miles or age of hoses to be determining factor. Thanks for the information.

Since we are talking about replacing hoses.... Has anyone changed or thought about changing the washer/dryer hoses after several years of using them?

We had some go bad in the stick house(s) we owned and just wondering if we should worry about them in the coach?

Always prudent to replace hoses and belts based on usually age, vs ware. Visual yearly inspections can help, especially on belts, but usually hoses are an age replacement item.

And, yeah 10 years seems to me to be a good timeframe. We replaced our hoses, engine and generator, at the 10 year mark. And, if not buying OEM Cummins/CAT/Detroit hoses, do at least get the best quality hoses you can purchase. I usually like Gates when it comes to hoses and belts, and they too, sometimes have different grades of quality.

IMO, it is always preferable to do a preventative strike on this kind of maintenance. Vs waiting for something to happen on the road. You can use your people, buy the parts from wherever you like, and do it on your schedule.

And yes to the washing machine hoses maintenance too. As with our sticks and bricks, we change over our washing machine, and toilet hoses, on 5 year schedule if rubber, and 7 years if stainless steel braided. (And note, SS Braided, still has a 'hose' inside of it!). We also do a yearly on/off of al the 1/4 shut off valves, to keep them from becoming frozen. If they don't work, I add that to a my maintenance list and replace them. And, same thing on quality. I avoid the junk that the larger hardware stores now carry. I do not consider a 'contractor grade group purchase of 10 valves' to be a 'good deal'. They're usually junk. So instead of say $2.50 a valve, I'll bay $7.50+ a valve - it is a good investment in the long run.

Best to all,

Sorry.....I mis-read. You replaced your hoses on the engine and the generator at the 10 year mark.

Smitty, did you do the engine hose swap yourself or have someone else do it?  I can only imagine how much labor is involved in replacing the hoses that run front to back on the coach.  Did you replace the hydraulic hoses to fan motor and power steering gear?

I'm thinking when I get to that point (next year), I would plan to get back out to Oregon and let one of those shops tackle that job.

I did it the old fashion way, wrote a check!

Any hose that was silicone, remained in place, like the HydroHot runs.

The OTR runs were replaced as well.
