Mike,

If you are asking about setting the engine type in the Silverleaf dash mounted unit, on mine, with the ignition key, on push the prog button. It brings up the VMS Preferences List. One of the ones on the list is Engine. Rotate the dial to move down to it and push the dial in to select it. Once selected rotating the dial will now move you to the right showing the engine selected. Rotating the dial will now go through the available engines. When you find Cummins 370 push the dial to select it. The dial will now alternate between the Preference and the list. Stop on the Preference and push to select and you can now continue down through the list of preferences. You can exit once you have the preferences you want by pushing another button below the dial.
Pushing the Spec button shows mine to be a VMS 200 EL. Can't speak for other models.

Bob, I have the built in version which I replaced with a CL240 in 2008.
And as a note, neither the torque nor the HP values follow the throttle. When I advance my throttle there is a meaningful lag between the application of throttle and the increase of torque and HP values reported by the SL. In fact, the SL values relate in time more closely to the "feel" of power than to the application of throttle.

Hmm, maybe my recollections are wrong - I stopped playing with it after satisfying myself with getting the thing set up the way I want it. I also suspect the more expensive built in units have more features than the PC based system. Next time we can get out there I'll play again. I traded up to the latest USB connect version - works much better and newest version firmware. I'm anxious to see what it does now. The SL guy says they use not only the files I described but also info from the ECM.
Have to get some minor surgery over first. Gettin' old certainly is a challenge. nothing serious, just need to push some body parts trying to escape back where they belong.

Mike, with the Silverleaf on press "PROG". It is very intuitive from there.

Good luck.

Bob,

The basic idea behind the Silverleaf is to convert and display some of the parameters in the ECM in plain English like numeric error codes, MPG etc. It basically is an interface to the ECM. It may have to do some lookups or calculations to provide some of the displayed output data. It incidentally was invented by a young high school kid as basically just a challenging project. Well he is no longer a high school kid and his financial situation is quite different also.

Good luck with your surgery and speedy recovery.

Low Front Brake Air Alarm

Good Morning All

I have a '93 Magna and was traveling across Iowathis week, just starting out on the 2nd day of our trip, and received a "front brakes low air pressure" alarm. I check the air gauge and both needles indicated proper air pressure around 112 pounds. I pulled off at the next exit and call for service.
While waiting for roadside service I purged the air tank and refilled. The alarm would fade off and then back on for the next 30 minutes.
When the tech arrived he said it might be a control module but couldn't seem to find it. I followed him back to his shop (without any alarms) and they continued to look for a problem but could not locate one. The diagnostics they tried to run was unsuccessfully because they did not know what info regarding the coach to program into the machine. They charged me $80 and sent me on my way with the explanation that it might have been a sticky air valve.
I have since driven over a 1000 miles without any more problems. Does anyone have any knowledge of this alarm and what might have caused it?

Many Thanks
Walt

Gentlemen,

As noted elsewhere, HP = (Torque x RPM) / 5252 . RPM is an accurate input to the SilverLeaf.
Torque is known quite accurately as a function of Turbo-Boost from engine dyno testing. Turbo-Boost depends upon throttle setting, and the maximum amount allowed by the engine computer at various RPMs. WOT will result in the maximum Turbo-Boost for a particular RPM. Less than WOT will immediately reduce Turbo-Boost, and therefore Torque, and therefore HP.
But, all the SilverLeaf needs to fairly accurately estimate Torque is the dyno derived curve of Torque vs Turbo-Boost.
Therefore, HP is also fairly accurately determined.

Walt;

Right under the driver you might find 3 air pressure switches? I have a 95 Magna and about two years ago I had one of these go. these are about a foot from the front drivers tire. Usually have two wires going to them and control the low air pressure warning lights on the dash. The one that went bad had a crack in the plastic portion of it. Still had air pressure but the leak caused the switch to indicate lo pressure. Just a suggestion.

Similar issue with my 04' Inspire a few months ago traveling between LA and Vegas. No alarm just an icon on the dash would lite up when I was climbing hills in high heat, never down a hill or on a flat road. Mechanic checked all valves and connections and said everything looked good. He could not reproduce the warning - was on flat land and it was not hot enough. I'm finishing a 4,000 mile trip throughout the westrern states and had it occur only once. Hopefully the phantom is gone!
