NAVIGATION SYSTEMS

It would be nice if some of the more popular Navigation Systems were on display at vendor booths during the CC reunion.
After trying Co Pilot with mixed results I would really like to see a thorough demonstration of the competing products before spending any more money on navigation tools.
We will be at the Redmond FMCA (walk ins). Does anyone know if Garmin, etc. will be there?
Failing that, maybe someone at the CC reunion will be willing to show their own systems to interested members.

We have the in-dash Pioneer DVD-based system installed in the Magna. It does okay, but has had some position difficulties in both West Texas and Eastern Arizona, when routed on I-10. It's database is quite extensive, and can be easily accessed by multiple methods.
I like the ease of typing in a RV Park's phone number and getting multiple routings. The GPS is only two dimensional, lacking an altitude output. The inertial navigation, backed up by the GPS, results in an "always on track" capability.

I also use Delorme's Street Atlas 2005 in our Dell notebook, along with Delorme's EarthMate GPS receiver on a USB connection. It sits on the dash and provides a better display and more information, like elevation. It allows trip planning away from the driver's seat, and I have files from all of our travels from 2002 on. Street Atlas allows construction of individual draw layers - I have one locating RV Parks where we stay. Also, you can make custom map tags, allowing personalized annotation. Lastly, I can output printed directions/maps for my spouse...

I miss the 120vAC recepticle up front, as we had in our previous Mag, but other than that I prefer the PC solution.

We like the Pioneer in our 05 Intrigue LE but...... it has a problem giving good directions (for a 40 ft coach) It takes us down the shortest route which is many times through downtown (off the main highways) In other words it would be much better if the Pioneer GPS would follow truck routes not down the city streets.
Our CoPilot software on our lap top routes much better and keeps us off the city streets. It also will find Diesel Fuel, while the Pioneer will not. The 2 main problems with the CoPilot is the lack of a good voice direction prompt, which sounds like a computer when it talks and the data inpute leaves a bit to be desired.

Best Buys sells Magellan's (and maybe Garmin). The interesting thing about Best Buy is their 3 or 4 year extended warranty (which I would normally not buy). But their extended warranty is apparently priced for the less expensive units -- making it very cheap for a Magellan 700 whose hard disk is bouncing around on the dash or window mount!!

I have DeLorme SA 2005, MS Streets and Trips and use a Garmin GPSIII as well as the new Copilot GPS receiver.

The Copilot GPS receiver is slower at acquiring the sats than the Garmin. I like the live position feature that Copilot has to send and receive GPS position reports and short messages with an internet connection. Of course many of us do not have a constant internet connecting while in motion. So this feature is really useless to me since I use ham radio to interface internet and GPS navigation data while I am in a fixed location as well as in motion.

Delorme has some great features but has had problems with sub contractors in providing POI databases. SA2005 has less POI detail than earlier versions because of it. I have been using Delorme SA since version 5. I like the capability to be able to edit maps, add notes and flags as well as build layers of data to be displayed.
Seems like when Delorme is doing a new release, there is always something they are taking out or changing for the worse. their advertizing leads you to believe that you are getting what you currently have plus the new added features. They never tell you what they are taking out.

MS S&T has some great detail, especially in Canada. However, the ease of setting up routing and adding your own layers of information in either very cumbersome or non-existant.

All in all they each have their own good and bad features.

Jim, we use the CoPilot 7.0 on Fujitsu Lifebook laptop. If it is setup right, it will show where the Diesel Stops are (at least in the USA). Works well.. but I agree it doesn't tell us if the fuel stop will handle our 65 feet of equiptment.

Our Factory GPS system, from Pioneer is much more fun to use and being guided to a destination with a "sweet female voice" is really cool. Even Jean, my better half likes it. They just need to upgrade the system to take account of our 65 ft of traveling home.

Am I missing something? We use a Next Exit book plus a WalMart Atlas plus Campground Directory to navigate and find everything we need while traveling.

Bruce,

If you've never used a good gps system you are not missing anything. If you use a good gps system for a short period you'll never go back. I only use a map for trip planning & never worry about being lost. It is kinda like once you have diesel it would be hard to go back to gas.

Just my experience.........

Not only it finds the stations but gives me direction just by entering a phone number or station type. I have the navigation unit hooked up to a motorized display.
