Dry Shaft PTO - Pictures

I, like many others I suspect, have/had the dry shaft PTO on a coach not covered by the recall. With 4 years and 52,000 miles I had Buddy Gregg in Knoxville, inspect the PTO and pump shaft. I am not sure if I had 5, 50, or 500 miles left on the shaft, but I believe failure was due at any time. I ended up replacing the pump, and installing the wet kit modification. A few high resolution photos of the shaft show just how close to failure we were. The images are posted in the Yahoo photo folder "Brumley 06 Inspire".

William, The Photos that you posted are great, thanks I would like to ask you a question and also direct it to some of the others that have had the PTO serviced or wet kit installed? My question is has anyone explored the possibility of putting 90weight gear oil into the pto using the existing holes and would like details if this has been done... any info in this type of fix would be appreciated., do not need any more info on the wet kit or the service every 5000mi. I have all that info.. Thanks..

I was working with Scott Zimmer at Source Manufacturing in Elmira, Or. today about a problem with our coach. I brought up the PTO problems with the lack of a wet kit. Scott told me that some of the hydraulic pumps that CC used are no longer being manufacturered. The existing pumps in the market are expected to double in price this fall. Scott can be reached at 541-935-0306 for more information. Scott is a good source for information about chassis problems. This is FYI.

I had not realized the PTO needed any routine maintenance. I guess I should recheck my service manual to see if any service was required. I only had it inspected after seeing the traffic on the newsgroup.

Were it not for this list I wouldn't have known about the spline maintenance requirement either. It's in the Parker/Chelsea manual but not mentioned in any of our CC literature. Me thinks CC could have saved us all a lot of grief & money if they had put this in the chassis maintenance schedule.

This increase in price sounds true. I was contacted by my Saur-danfoss distributor and told that any S-D pumps that ship after Sept 30 2009 will see in increase of up 150% in price. I am trying to negotiate an alternative to this and will post my results as soon as possable

Anyone have experience with raw diesel fumes in coach? On first look over, cannot find any reason for the fumes. Maybe someone has experience and can help me locate source.

Hi,

The most common cause of fumes that start coming in the coach, when there had been nine, is either the generator or the aqua hot fuel lines. If you start following the lines from these 2 back to the tank, you will probably find a wet line, usually caused by dry rotting. There was a period of time, when Monaco used fuel line that was not the best suited for diesel. I forget exactly when it was, Happy Hunting.

ooppps forget the monaco comment, but the same could be true for CC as well, maybe you will get lucky and it will just be a loose fitting.

Leonard we have an 05 Inspire and had a really serious problem with the fumes. My mechanic installed about a 2 inch diameter hose to someplace on the motor and all the fumes disappeared, and the engine is spotless clean. I am sorry I can not be more specific, but my only expertise is placing the key in the ignition and turning rt.

Fuel fumes as in raw/unburned diesel. I have dropped all the panels in the bay to get to the hose/wire galley. Cannot find anything visible or a single source of smell, yet when I shut it up and come back later the big center bay, that goes all the way across, has a strong diesel smell. That is the area of the coach we smell it inside the most. Is it possible for the Aeroquip hose to be allowing smell through it? Anyone? I have seen silicone heater hose that allowed the smell of anti-freeze to come through and there were no leaks. Sure would hate to have to change out the hose. Would not be a fun job at all.

Still looking for input and ideals on this.

Leonard, I would try to pull a vacuum on your fuel hoses, engine and generator. With a 97 coach there is a good possiblity they are bad.
I had to change the Gates Rubber Co supply and return hoses on my Hurricane Diesel Boiler.

I had a similar smell. When I changed to CAT ELC coolant, the problem went away.
