Water leak/pump

Yahoo Message Number: 3734
For the past few weeks, I have noticed the water pump cycling occasionally, but have not located any water leaks.
Sunday afternoon, I filled my fresh water tank to about 3/4. Tuesday afternoon, I noticed water running out under the coach. I turned off the water faucet and the water stopped running out from under the coach.
I turned the water back on and all was fine until this morning when I noticed water running out again so I turned off the faucet and it stopped.
The water pump has not been on during this time.
A neighbor crawled under the coach and says that it appears to be coming from the fresh water tank--which is now showing full --remember it was 3/4 full on Sunday and I have not added any more to it. It *appears* to me that somehow the water is going into the fresh water tank and filling it until it over flows. Is there a one-way valve somewhere in the system that could be messed up letting the water go into the tank?

Now if I have the water pump on, it cycles about every 10 seconds.
Here on the Baja, water is delivered by truck to the lots and put in a tank for using. I had the 600 tank filled Sunday and it is now empty. Doesn't look like that much has run out, but the water just disappears into the sand so quickly I guess anything is possible.
The neighbor will check back tomorrow to see if anybody has any suggestions.
This is the part of RVing and being a single female that I don't like!!!

Ree,

On our 2000 Intrigue the valve that controled where the water went( tank verses inside pipes)did not turnoff all the way and we flooded four camp sites in Las Vegas on our way home from picking up the coach at CCI. In our case the valve was mounted on a wall in the plumbing bay and the thickness of the wall was keeping it from closing all the way and the tank would fill all the time. Don't know if this is your problem but I would check this valve closly.

The diverter valve located in the tank compartment is probably not completely closed to the vertical position or it has an internal leak. If this condition is present, it will allow water to continue entering the water tank when you are hooked up to an outside faucet. If you are not hooked up, you probably have a leak downstream of the water pump.

Ree, I had the identical problem with my 2000 Intrigue and my 2003 Allure. In both cases it turned out to be the water pump allowing water to backflow to the fresh water tank. The pumps were replaced in both cases, eliminating the problem.

Thanks for all the replies to my question. It sounds like I had pretty well diagnosed the problem and that there is no fix for it until I get to a service center. I am in Mexico, about 180 miles from Yuma. It sounds like I will just have to live with it until I get back to the states in April or May. I will keep the faucet turned off and use out of my fresh tank, turning the pump on and off at the wall as needed. I bought a house here, and after closing next week, I will spend more time in it than in the rig anyway.
Several of you mentioned a water diverter for switching the water from going in the coach to go into the fresh tank. If I have such a thing, I have not located it. My previous rig had such a valve. On this one, I have to disconnect the hose from going into the coach and put the hose into an opening to fill the tank. Am I missing something or is this not on the Allure?

Sure would love to find a valve for this.

Thanks,
Ree

Very interesting---this is the same thing that happened to my coach.
After the water pump was replaced, everything was fine.

On my 2003 Allure, there is a yellow handle near the bottom left part of the utility area. This handle, when turned to the left, diverts water to the holding tank. When it is in the upright position it keeps water from going into the holding tank. Look for the yellow handled valve.

Thanks Tom,

I do have the yellow handle. I changed positions and nothing happened. I moved it back and forth several times to see if it would do anything. The guy that came down to help me did something with it and water drained from an over flow tube, but not the same one as the fresh tank over flow. When I need to fill the tank again, I will try it. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, Ree, where did you buy your coach and who did the orientation with you?

At Evergreen RV Center in New Braunfels, TX. They are a new dealer for CC.
Mine was the first on they sold. A couple of the techs did the walk through. While there some things that they did not cover thoroughly enough, I feel that the techs are very well trained in RV repairs and can recommend the dealership for service. I had taken my previous coach there for repairs, and was treated so well that I had no hesitation about buying there. And, they have bent over backwards to help me get the bugs out of this coach.

I have had a similar problem with my water pump cycling on and off for apparently no reason. At Fort Benning, the CC Tech told me that since I have no leaks, the problem is probably a back flow problem in the pump itself. The pump cycles up the pressure and then over time water leaks backwards into the supply tank and thereby reduces the pressure and the motor cycles on again. This has been an intermittent problem and now, it is not occuring. With my situation, the problem appears to occur when we first start using the coach -- after a period of "storage time." My guess is that with frequent usage the pump seals begin to regain their normal position and the problem goes away.
Regarding the water leaks from your main storage tank...... Cycle your fresh water drain valve a few times with the water pump on and off. This valve might be sticking. You might have a bad valve. I recently had a problem with my temp/pressure valve on the hot water tank. It malfunctioned and I would be draining hot water every time we drove some where. These valves never go bad, but mine did! @#$$!! Fortunately it was a cheap, $8.00 fix. I've also found that when I use the fresh water fill switch in my coach, it shuts off, when there is still quite a bit of room in my fresh water tank. I think that it automatically shuts off when the tank is about 85% full. So, when I want to really stock up on water, I use the outside fill opening and just fill till water exits the overflow outlet.

If you don't have your hot water heat on all the time, the water will gradually cool. (As we all know, water expands with heat, contracts when cooled) Guess what? When it contracts it also decreases the pressure registered in the switch located on the water pump. As the water cools, the pump cycles periodically to maintain correct pressure.
