Transfer Switch Questions

Last time we went to hook up to shore power, only one leg of the 50 amp hookup was hot. First thought it was a problem with the park's electric as everything was fine when the genny was used instead of shore power but after checking parks power, it was clear that it was a problem in the coach itself. Finally, with the coach hooked up to shore power, started the genny and stopped it, exercising the transfer switch and everything then worked on shore power.
This happened after we went through a tremendous rain and wind storm at Quartzsite this week.
Now I'm concerned this switch may be going bad and have no clue where it is located or where to find a replacement now that CC is defunct. The books don't give a clue as to location or part number.
Maybe the switch just needs "exercising" or cleaning? Would sure help to know where it is.

This is a 1998 Allure #30180.

Dan,

I'm not familiar with a '98 Allure specifically, but I do own a '98 Intrigue. Mine is behind the bed nightstand drawers on the driver's side. Remove the drawers & you will see it if it was installed like the Intrigues. It should be a black plastic box.

On my 2000 Allure the transfer switch is located behind the master breaker panel in the cabinets over the bed. Access is through the driver side cabinet.

As Don already told you, the location of the transfer switch in our 2000 Allure is also in the over head cabinet over the bed. Not an easy place to work in!
We had to have our transfer switch replaced this past summer. We were in Denver and a mobile tech secured it for us and replaced it. It is a model ATS501 Series Automatic Line/Generator Switch. It was manufactured by Parallax Power Supply, 596 Broadway, Anderson, IN 46012 - 800 443-4859.
If you can't locate one in Q'site, and are headed east toward Phoenix, let us know and we will try to locate one for you at an RV supply here. Possibly Camping World here would have one.

If you think that is a bad place to work, try in a little compartment two feet into a bay! That is how it is in my Magna. You end up on your side and back working. Really fun when you have to replace the inverter which weight about 40 lbs. also down there. Only good thing is that these noisy items are down deep out of the way of ears. You can use any 50 amp transfer switch, BTW. CW sells the Parallax. It has been totally redesigned. The first one I got a year ago was defective from the beginning, so I had to replace it again. So far the second one has been perfect and works better with my generator.

Thanks everyone, I'll look in all those locations. Fortunately, I didn't see anything that looks like this switch in that awful location where the Hart inverter is. :>)
Any comments on the "exercising" idea? Or had I better do a pre-emptive change before the thing stops working altogether?

Before you replace the transfer switch, check voltage at either the surge protector or the transfer switch. We had the male end of our shore power cord go south - had intermittent 120/240. If I shook the cord just right, I could get power on both legs. $25 for a replacement head is a lot cheaper and a lot easier to install!
