Starter Problem

I have a 2007 Magna with the ISX motor. Has anyone with an ISX had starter problems. Changed batteries checked all cables and still starts very hard with a pause during cranking.

I was having starter problems. When I turned the key to engage the starter, sometimes it would engage, and sometine it wouildn't. Turned out that the starter solinoid was bad. Cummins wanted almost $800.00 for a complete starter they didn't show just the solinoid. What the parts guy at Cummins told me was the starter was a Delco starter. I asked for the Cummins part number for the complete starter, took that number to Nash Truck Parts (a local truck parts store), they crossed matched the Cummins p/n to a Delco starter and were able to get me just the solinoid for $43.00. Starts first time every time. It also helps to have a Diesel Mechanic available that only charges $25.00 an hour.

Has anyone had any issues starting their ISX. I replaced the starting batteries and checked all cables for corrosion. All the cables are soldered with shrink sleeving and no corrosion. Engine starts normally 95% of the time then every once in awhile when you turn the key there is a single rotation followed by a pregnant pause, at which time warning lights galore illuminate, then it turns over rapidly and starts. I'm considering pulling the starter and replacing it. Any thoughts?

Sounds like you might have a bad "Bendix" gear on the starter. The next time it does it try hitting the starter with a rubber mallet or a piece of wood.

If it were a bad bendix gear you would at least hear the starter motor turning. All I get is the sound of a relay or something
