Fan Controller Update

Thanks to all the input I've received on my Erratic Cooling Fan Operation.
The most interesting situation was Herb's internal chassis battery shorting that caused his high temp. problem.
I should not have trusted Cummins-NW-Corburg assumption that my Coolant Thermostat was functioning Correctly, if they could not diagnose the cause of my Problem..
I've ruled out installing a by-pass switch in the voltage input (2 prong connection) circuit as a band-aide fix.
I did not want to monitor my Silverleaf all the time to know when to flip the switch.
I want the system to function as good, or maybe even better, than CC-Engineers intended.
Another concerning situation is that Saucer-Danfoss is a British Company.
As a past & present owner of MG motor cars, that All have Had a Bumper Sticker Stating: "Parts falling off this Vehicle are of the Finest British Workmanship".
We all need a little humor to endure such frustrating situations.
Anyway, We are back at our Redmond, Or. Farm. not without 2 more High Temp/No Fan On Situations.
I downloaded a PDF specification file from Saucer-Danfoss's web site on the #1090409 Fan Drive Control Assembly.
The max. temp operation range is 221 deg. F. That goes along we my thinking that High Module temp is effecting the logic of electrical components in the potted unit.
That theory was disputed in one of the recent response posts. Just using my Engineering Education failure logic to maybe find the cause.
On our drive from Caldwell to Redmond, we had the 2 prong connection connected when leaving Caldwell.
The coolant fan function properly until we stopped in Burns (3-1/2 hr. drive) for a 10 minute rest stop with the engine left idling at 800 rpm & 184 deg. engine temp.
Within 5 miles after continuing, the High temp episode began, requiring the default mode to be implemented.
The module was so hot I could not hold onto it for more the 10 seconds. Not sure how hot that is, but It is time to order a new module and built a Shield to keep new one cooler.
A phone call to John Davis indicated that he had the same exact assembly on order with a 4 week delivery.
I called Berendsen in Eugene, OR. (541-342-1804) and ordered one Assembly for $409.01. It will be UPS'd directly to our farm in 4 weeks.
Lee Casebeer - '01 Intrigue #11219 x ISC 350 HP Cummins PS: I had Cummins-NW replace the Controller in Sept. 2007 with a High Speed All the Time Condition.
I just talked to Dick Eckhart (a fellow NWCCer Member) this morning. He is in Canton, Ohio at a CAT dealer with the same hi-temp problem.
Another mute question: With Engine Cooling being such a critical function, What did the CC-Engineers continue with such a vulnerable design for so many years.
Maybe part of the Answer is: CC is no Longer in Business & just maybe all those Engineers are still in that Long Unemployment line In Eugene! ! ! !

Lee,

CC isn't the only using the SD controller. Virtually every side radiator coach has one. Colton Truck Terminal has a pile of them and they were removed from CC, Beaver, Monaco, Dutch Star just to name a few. It could be that the parameters set by CC are wrong. By chance did you have the engine computer read? It will record out of limit temps so they can be read later.

I do not know when and what models were changed, but my 08 Inspire has a different fan cooling set up.
There are no S-D components, it consists of a variable displacement Eaton hydraulic pump driven by the PTO on the drivers side of the transmission.
This pump drives 2 fans/motors that change speed only by responding to the output of the pump. The motors have no internal speed controlling capability.
Nor do they have any electrical connections to them
The Eaton pump has 2 output volumes and switches from the normal (lower) setting to the higher setting when commanded by an external controller that in turn is controlled by a signal from the engine computer.
This controller is dumb and binary and only has a 2 wire connection to it.
The high speed adjustment is on it, the lower speed adjustment is on the pump itself.
It accomplishes the change by applying hydraulic pressure to the pilot input on the pump when commanded.

The problem is the CC Dynomax chassis used a custom SD motor, mount, and controller rather than off-the-shelf parts: custom parts, custom specs, custom mounting. Since Dynomax went away with CC, SD doesn't make them anymore. When mine went out, they were all replaced by the system Gillig uses in their city buses. Now they're standard and available and mechanics can work on them.

I may be a little late weighing in on this discussion but I do want to add a fact or two. I went through the whole process of changing the controller, added a switch, cleaned the radiator, repiared the charge air cooler, none of these helped , still overheating. I solved the problem by checking the fan speed it maxed out at 1800 rpm when it is supposed to run 3000 at max engine rpm. It came from the factory with the wrong fan motor and fan motor bypass flow settings. Put a spacer under the buypass spring and solved the problem fan runs at 3000 rpm at max engine rpm. and it does not overheat under any condition. My problem may have been unique but if you haven't checked the fan speed you should. I also found that SD does not make parts any longer and the best way may be to replace the whole set up with Spartan or Gillig components.

Brian, you are wrong as regards the controller. These are available from suppliers all across the country. They are a standard product for SD. Sauer Danfoss still manufactures them. I don't know about the other stuff you mention. .

Jim, where did you find that SD does not make controllers any more?
