Route Through Boston

Hi George,

Very nice pictures of the Big Dig but I also have to add that either you carefully planned it or got very lucky. They are not the normal view of traffic a great deal of the time. During the middle of the week probably between 11:00 am and 3:00pm. Even then the slightest glitch can make a mess of things particularly on the 8 miles of the Southeast Expressway that leads up to the Big Dig. Saturday and Sunday Mornings are usually pretty good but in the afternoons it can pick up particularly Sunday with the Logan Airport weekend returning flight traffic. The third tunnel to East Boston has helped but it still can be tough. The pictures appear to have been on a trip from south to north but the same applies to north to south.
The biggest problem with I-93 across Boston is that it is very unpredictable. I have timed it well and sailed through but the next time might get snarled in and hour or more of stop and go traffic. Boston traffic is not very tolerant of vehicles that do not know which lane to be in. I have family on the South Shore where I sometimes leave my motor home. When I take it north to NH, I always use I-495. Of course that is not to say that a bad accident on I-495 cannot generate long delays but it seems to happen less often.

Having the aquahot serviced in the area, diesel burner hasn't been working for about 2 weeks now, we're getting a little tired of army showers and the heat pumps.

Hi Don

I think you are right that we were lucky to get through the Big Dig with no traffic hitches. I don't think we would have considered it had it not been a Sunday, and there was plenty of traffic even then.
I just became intrigued with the idea as I had earlier seen a documentary on TV about the engineering feats it took to build it. I also would not have done it without the advice of one of our members who e-mailed me pritately saying you can drive a coach through there. I did study the lanes on Google Earth, so it was a well planned mission that we will always remember.
