Coolant Boost Pump??

Yahoo Message Number: 64998
We have a 2000 Affinity Bed & Breakfast model and are experiencing a loud rumbling within our engine compartment when the ignition switch is to the start position, but not turning on the engine itself. We talked to a shop and they said it had nothing to do with the engine, but something that is related to the coach. We were wondering if it could be a coolant boost pump that may be going bad? The position under the floor in the bedroom is midway in the room at the foot of the bed (passenger side). Any ideas on this?

Don,

If the Affinity is like my Magna, the only thing in that area is the circulation pump for the Hurricane and if the furnace isn't on, it shouldn't be running. My pumps ran all the time because someone left the pump jumper on the Hurricane control board in the service position. When I turn on the key there is nothing running at the rear of the coach. The pump on mine is located inboard behind the Hurricane, just about under the foot of the bed.

Don, ASAP pull the fuse or cut one of the wires at that boost pump. From my own personal experience if that pump shorts out the result will be a fire in the electric bay under the drivers seat. I nearly lost my coach several years ago when a fire was noticed while waiting at a stop sign. The pump shorts out but doesn't trip the fuse. Another thing I found was the mounting of the pump had the impeller housing mounted that was a dirt and dust collector. There is no protection for this pump from the elements. I re mounted the pump sideways. If you need the hoses they are available at NAPA. There hose catalog is excellent. You might consider replacement of the forward boost pump also. This one is mounted behind the front bumper passenger side.
I'am sure someone on this forum will have the contact for these pumps. If you are unable to change the pump yourself get the pump or you will probably risk getting packed away on the cost of the pump.
There has been much pro and con about these pumps running all the time. When you turn the key on they run until the key is off. Some have installed switches to have manual control operation.

Al,

When I found my pumps running all the time, I discussed with Randy at Hurricane and he said they should not be running. As is stated, on mine, it was a simple jumper on the board left in the service position running the pumps continuously. Are you saying the Affinity was designed to run the coolant pumps anytime the key is on? If that is the case, is it possible owners could just reset the jumper as I did or the pumps hard wired to run at all times? Running the pumps full time without the heater running makes no sense!

The coolant boost pump on my 2002 Intrigue lost a bearing and made the noise you have described. The location is on the frame rail, between the radiator and the engine (radiator on the driver side). I changed mine out myself, not to bad if you don't mind getting dirty. About $200 for the pump if I remember correctly. Don't know anything about your coach so none of this may apply. I think there is more information regarding the coolant pump on this board somewhere.

Tom,

That was the case on the 2000 Affinity which had 2 pumps wired for... key on...pump on. From my experience the engine compartment and the front bumper pump ran with "key on" I remember you found some well meaning tech had your Hurricane pump running all the time. That was intended or carelessness on leaving the jumper wire in. The 3 ad and 4th pump mounted in the Hurricane bay and electric bay behind the fuel tank only ran with Hurricane on.
I think there are several ways to look at key on run. As CC sees consumer to have instant heat in the front drivers section. With 2 boost pumps this is possible as soon as engine temp comes up. Otherwise the complaint would be, no heat, takes to long, heater doesn't work.
You can also have non moving coolant issues causing problems of when it sits stagnate for long periods, The worst would of been heater core at driver/co pilot. Good idea to turn on even for short periods every so often. I had the entire black box out (on the bench) to replace a failed blower motor. lucky me. The only access is complete removal from coach. Captured the 134 A at engine port to holding tank. cleaned, reinstalled.(3 day project) Both of the pumps most often with failure or leaking are #1 the over engine which was poorly mounted and subject to high heat and trash. # 2 at front bumper.
Having a spare on board is not a bad idea or at least a by- pass hose insert.in your spare parts. At least you can continue on your trip.
Best regards,

Pull fuse and see if noise goes away on the Coolant Cir. Pump. 12vdc and owners drawings show you the fuse to pull. Keep us posted. Ken 99 Allure 30356
