Shower valve, no cold water.

Has anyone had the problem with only hot water when the shower valve is turned on? It turns off completely when the valve is turned to the cold side. John

I have taken it apart including taking out the stem. I use to have Moen valves at my home and have a puller. The stem looks good with O-ring attached. There is a a large screw on the right. Has anyone torn one down? I am heading up to Portland today and will pick up parts if I can figure out what is needed. John 2002 Allure

I just went thru this. Google Moen or Moen rough-in valve. Some of their literature will have a trouble shooting number at the bottom of the page. The valves are warranteed to the original owners and parts will be free. If you end up paying for the parts, shop the internet suppliers as the prices vary widely for the same part.
My problem was the balancing spool which is that 1" brass screw head to the right of the stem. I also replaced the stem because it was easy and parts were readily available but that wasn't my problem. The balancing spool has an internal part that has to be free to move. If you take the spool out and it doesn't rattle, soak it in white vinegar or CLR and see if you can free it up. It may be that easy.
The Moen folks seemed to have a good handle on getting to the source of the problem. Worth the call.

Dan, your suggestion to use white vinegar did the trick. I replaced the cartridge as well. Works like new. Thanks for your help. John Allure2002
