Minimum Battery Size For Diesel Start?

I think this is question begs for a good discussion on it's own. Just what is minimum battery bank to start a diesel? I think two 8D's is over kill, except in very rare occasion, i.e. very, very cold weather, or a diesel with glow plugs-which is old and dead. The local school bus fleet stopped using a single 8D years ago. They use two smaller batteries. I think they are two 12 volts. They work very well in the coldest Oregon valley weather. Cheaper, lighter. So if we did not have to carry two 8 D's what could we use in the space of one 8 D to open the other space for more coach batteries? When I purchased batteries the shop talked me into keeping both 8 D's. Really wish I had done my homework better and stood my ground on only one or two smaller ones.

the information I just found for the starter on a C12 is it requires 1280 cold cranking amps which is a bit more than my D4 battery has and lightly less than a D8 battery that is bing used now.

Dallas, if those batteries have been discharged for that long, in that weather, I would guess you will need a new set of batteries anyway. For a full set you might get a salesman bring them to you. Just my thoughts, trying to help.

Ken here ret. Cat Tech. Yes a good 8-D battery will work on your C-12. Make sure your cables ar in good shape at The Battery end and Starter end! Any Cat dealer can give the Amp draw if you wish just call them. Ken 99 Allure 30356
