Satelite on the the RV

I'm still seeking info about putting Sat. on my RV and I'm being told that the only way to go is with the open face dish VS the Dome. They say HD is the best, reception is the best. What i'm putting on is going to be for using at camp grounds etc, not going down the road. What do all think ??? Jack 2004 Allure 31006

I have the open dish from MotoSat and as far as I am concerned, it is the only way to go. I think there is only one dome that can receive the HD stuff so you are pretty limited. You will be much happier with an open dish.

Compare MotoSat and Winegard. Although MotoSat was the best system for several years, Winegard came out with an auto dish that is a couple hundred dollars cheaper and software that never needs updating. I've had both and I would recommend Winegard. They are both open face dishs and only used when stationary.

I had a MotoStat on the CC when we purchased it. Could not give it away. Took it off and tossed it. Winegard is lots, lots lighter and works great.

If you are asking about HD vs standard def, you should first check if your TV's are capable of, and wired for HD. If not, you will have to increase your budget.
If you don't care about the HD image, which may be more and more a factor if you are like me, and your vision needs all the help it can get as they eyeballs get older, you can probably find a dealer with a good used standard def dish. Most dealers will likely have some laying around from upgrading customers to HD.

Yes - get DVR, it gives you a lot more flexibility in viewing times No - you don't need in-motion

Yes - find a qualified installer so that it will all work!

What other info do you need?

I have Motosat, it's very good - easy upgrades with the removable SD card Also installed a 40" LED Samsung - the picture quality with HD feed is fantastic.
Some like Winegard

Pick your installer and service provider and away you go!!!

Leonard, sounds like you are comparing an internet dish by motosat to a tv dish by winegard. Big difference in size and wt. The tv product weighs about the same, Motosat has a 3 year warranty, Winegard much less, Motosat can be repaired by almost anyone with a couple tools if it does go bad, which is very rare, and Winegard, must be sent into factory if it has a problem. I do know that they work very well so far, and are finally a decent system now, after many years of nothing but almost junk from them. Motosat only business is RV SAt and TV, and do believe the do the best job. Also, no dome is available that will do direct tv HD, but there are some that can do Dish Net. Still perfer Direct tv myself.

We have the dome now. We plan to urgrade in 2012. New cabinets, larger LCD etc up front. We will also be upgrading to HD and plan on an HD open dish. Dome is not good in rain, fog or even a little damp.

Davis Cabinets in Junction City modified the front cabinets. We also had them install powered MCD shades to replace the front drapes, a computer work station, and they did some work on the existing cupboards and pantry.
Their work is so close to factory finish, you can't tell what's new and what isn't.
Major renovations last year - we also removed carpet in the main area (installed engineered flooring), installed solar and AGM batteries, and a new radiator.

Were you happy with the finish trim work on the MCD shades? Some of the jobs I have seen including two factory installations looked like a back yard mechanic did the final trim work.

Reportedly, the new GPS MotoSat's find the satellites much faster. I am happy with our MotoSat set up but just like the hydro hot systems it is good to maintain a list of competent installers and service facilities. Don't rely on MotoSat to tell you who is qualified to work on motor homes. My biggest complaint was authorized installers not having the right equipment to trouble shoot a motor home.

I suspect you were trying to give away the non HD MotoSat. I talked to a lot of tech types and owners of systems before I went with MotoSat and never heard a negative. I have also never heard anyone in the group trying to get rid of their MotoSat HD system. The software upgrades are an issue until you figure it out and they have simplified the process greatly with the newer controllers. I have probably upgraded mine three times in the past 2 ½ years.

When I spoke with davis a few years ago, he said a 32 inch tv was about the most they could fit in the modification up front. Has that view changed?

Dan, I believe he was trying to give away a Datastorm by motosat, that was designed for internet, with a tv option. They were 110 lbs, very slow aquiring satellite, but they did work if set up proper. I have seen many that people want to give away, and I never take em. On the other hand, any motosat tv system, that is not a dome, I will take any anyone wants to give away. They have been great product since 96, and no other company has come close to all their capabilities. I will admit, as I have before, the Winegard of new (within last year maybe two) has been a good system. The first in many years of building what I would consider junk.
Motosat's HD system for tv, weighs in about 35 lbs, and comes with a mounting plate 13.5 in, by 35 inches. The wineguard, is a small round type, putting all the weight in a much smaller area. The fact that no one can fix a problem, and they must be sent to the factory if such is needed is not too good also. I like the fact, that a good service installer, can repair anything on a Motosat right on the coach, with little parts, or ??? The upgrade stuff is easy now, and available 24/7. Motosat controller boxes are easy to set up for any service, unlike Winegard if you decide to change. Dish to Direct or visa versa. Winegard, requires a new complete controller.
A few reasons why I like Motosat, Will say, they have many dealers out there, and only a handfull that really know what they are doing. Finding a mobile dealer, that deals in them always is worth the hunt. As a former Customer service mgr. for Motosat, I know about 10 really good ones, and I also know many more that I could not recommend

I been dealing and selling and repairing their product since 1987.

Hope this will help some make a dicision.

The best place to have one installed is at an FMCA Rally. I see the same retailers and their installers at most rallies. They wouldn't return time after time if they were doing shoddy work. I had mine replaced about 5 years ago and the work was excellent, prompt, and has been leak and problem free. Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111

Just have to pipe in here. I have an old Motosat "Executive" on my coach, along with an old Sony receiver. The receiver died, and DirecTV will not authorize any old receivers so I have to buy a newer one. Unfortunately, the old Executive only works with the older receivers, so I have to replace the Executive with a "Nomad" or newer. Anyone know where I can find one?

Dan: The trim work was excellent - all trims were made of matching wood so it looks like it was built like that from day 1.
The only real issue with adapting the MCD front shade is that the driver's console has that hump extending into the dash which impedes the shade from falling straight down.
However, this is not a big deal. The shades (front and both sides) give full black-out inside the coach.
This MCD modification is one of the best we have done because it eliminated that annoying curtain on the track which continually jumped the track and sent those little rollers falling all over the place.
We love it - just push the button and it's done.

Rich: I don't know about the Magna, but the Samsung 40" fits perfectly between the 2 side cupboards on an Inspire.
It could be that the TV's have changed. This Samsung has very little side bar on it.
Talk to Matt at Innovative Coachworks. He has done this many times and he will know what fits.

Al, where are you currently located? New ones available at many good dealers, and also get trade ins often of the earlier Nomad2 or Nomad. The new ones are labled SD-2. they cost about 600. Some websites sell them for about $550. Any of them with proper set up will work with any of the new receivers.
