Magna Clearcoat Problem

Yahoo Message Number: 4855
I have a 1998 Magna with peeling/lifting clearcoat on my roof (front cap and along both sides). Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so, how did you resolve it as it really looks terrible for this level coach.

I was told by the paint department at Lazydays that cracking clearcoat is caused by not waxing the coach with a good carnuba wax at least every 6 months. The paint department was in the process of re-painting a coach that had severe cracking and I asked them the cause. They told me that I should keep a good coat of pure carnuba wax on the finish and the clearcoat cracking won't be a problem.
Once the finish cracks, you've got to sand it down and reapply the clearcoat finish.

Thanks for input; I was hoping I wouldn't have to sand it down as I don't know how thick the gelcoat is. Also, I guess I think if I have to get up on the roof to wax every 4 to 6 months, why bother yo clearcoat it. A local truck painting facility suggested that they remove the old clearcoat by glass beading the roof then re-applying clearcoat but I think Country Coach should stand by the product and repair it.

Peeling clearcoat on the roof and front caps is a common problem which occures from a chalking roof. Have you noticed white streeks on the sides of the coach? I don't know if there is a solution short of repainting the clearcoat areas. To prevent the problem you need to remove all the caulking by washing the roof, then buffing the roof with a good automotive compounder then apply a uv protectant wax. The waxing needs to be done every 3 months, the roof needs to be washed everytime you wash the coach. We were at Lazy Days last year when the CCI teck called the chalking to our attention, so we did as he instructed and the chalking disappeared and the clearcoat is fine.
There is also an area in the maintenance manual that addresses this.

Hello

My 1995 Magna had the exact same failure. After much research and a little Country Coach advice, this is what I learned and did.

CC said it needed to be buffed thoroughly and then "recleared", I found no vendor who agreed or would do it. I tried it, but made it look worse.

The "Paint Department" (Chino, CA) said clearcoat over gelcoat (the case in point) does not last (a boat dealer and my ultimate painter both said the same thing.)

All recommended that matching paint be applied to the cab brow area gelcoat and then clearcoated. My local truck painter did it in three days, it looks great, and my wallet is lighter by $1,000.

But now we enjoy a sharp looking coach again.

If you have another 9,000 to spend you could probably get a full paint job with new clear coat.

Hi Dean

Who and where is your truck painter. Sounds like a great price.
Since our 99 Allure was only clearcoated on the painted areas and not on the gel coat, I had a bid from CC painter in Junction City to fix it. They wanted $18k to sand and clearcoat. We thank them for the bid.

Professional Fleet Services, Inc. Sacramento CA 916-387-6082. They do collision work for some RV dealers in the area and had some good looking trucks being done. They did my windshield to top of roof area removing clear coat, painted to match the gel coat and applied the new clear coat. That and a lot of hassle trying to match the sikkens paint on my new hot water heater door (long, sad story) cost me about $1200. The sikkens paint was quite a problem but looks good now that that part is done. I am guessing that the clear coat and paint of the brow would be about $1000.

Key thing seems to be clear coat over paint, not over gel coat.
I have misplaced the gentleman's card, but enjoyed working with them.
They were looking to do more RV's. $18K should buy a fine paint job.

Thanks Dean,

We get to the Sacramento area quite offen to see our daughter and family. They live in the Elk Grove area. We park the unit at Cal Expo. I'll look up Professional Fleet and take the unit over to them for a bid.
