fan controller

Hello Everyone

I have a 2002 Allure. Everytime I first start the coach within 5 secs the fan comes on and goes to high speed. I checkd the fan fuse and it looks ok. Is this Normal, or does this indicate a bad fan controller?

Jack, There are a few things to check into and rule out before throwing money at a new controller.

1. Make sure the 2 wire power connection into the fan controller is seated well.

2. Pull out the 6 wire connector and make sure the wires are well seated into the prongs, clean connector well and reconnect with dielectric grease.

3. Re-Start engine cold and see if the fan now runs at SLOW RPM approx. 500RPM or goes right back to FAST.

4. Next step is to replace Coolant Sensor about $25.00
5. If the Coolant Sensor is not issue, then replace Air Temp Sensor about $25.00
6. If not the Coolant or Air Temp Sensors then it looks like a Bad Controller.

Do you have the airconditioning on, or the controls set to vent? That will cause the controller to run on high. You should also chack the water temp and air temp sensors as a bad one will make the controller run high. Somewhere haer in the files section is a temp versus resistance graph that can be used to troubleshoot. It wil require removing the sensors and using hot water and an ohm meter to test them.

Could you not just check the voltage on the connection to verify there is not a open circuit for whatever reason? Is there not a fuse in this circuit? It's the lack of current that causes it to go to high from my understanding but I've never really had to work on mine. Glad this time I don't have more experience to draw from! Kevin Burns

Odds are it is a sensor. Check the archives for the resistance readings. There are two, one in air tube from turbo and one in water.

On my coach, with the engine running at idle, I tried moving the wires around at the controller and the fan RPM reduced drastically. You might have a loose connection that's not allowing the fan to see 12 volts? I never did find the smoking gun, but am still working.

The fan defaults to full speed if it looses the 12 volt source. Check for 12 volts across the red and green wires. The red should be the live lead and the green a chassis ground. There is a fuse in the chassis fuse box usually found in the bay under the driver's side window. Mine is a 7.5 amp and is labeled as the Fan Controller. I have an 04 Allure.
Also check that the sensors are good. They are the other 3 wires but configurations vary from coach to coach. It would but bad news to replace the controller and then find out it was only a bad sensor. Make sure that the engine thermostat is working properly. A bad one can cause some strange results.

I have 99cc the eng temp normally ran 193 to 198 ...now wont go over 180 I have most posts on this but when I got under coach I can not find the controler..not in rad housing and see no connectors going to anything from hyd pump to fan drive motor...cant see anything I have seen in sauer danfoss down loads ...any help would be greatful...........rich keklak 99cc 40ft intrigue #10739

Rich, your 99' utilizes a WAX Controller you should find hydraulic hoses running to an from. I suggest you call the Country Coach in Junction City, OR they may still have some in stock or know where to purchase.

Our 98 does not have dan foss controller. Contolled by hydraulic valve located on side of rad top left. Not all that fun to take apart. Same problem as you but mine was sending unit in the end.

I am having to replace my fan controller. Kevin Waite has helped get me one but Sauer Danfoss would not proogram it for a Cat C13. Does anyone know where I could get the controller programmed (I live in the Houston area) and also what the settings are for the C13.

When I talked to an engineer from SD, he told me that the controllers come already programed as per the spec required by the coach manufacturer. I would suggest a call to SD to confirm. Have the part# handy

The Sauer Danfoss FDCA comes programmed from the factory. The part number, which in your case may be 1090411, specifies the programming and the electrical connectors.

Dan, I just had my fan controller re-programed at National Indoor Storage in Lewisville TX. It's not that close to Houston but might work for you in a pinch.

So far I have not resolved this issue. Very frustrating--I've talked to Country Coach, Caterpillar, Sauer Danfoss (who referred me to Berendson Fluid Power) and have yet to receive a definitive answer as to whether the 1090411 controller is programmed for the C13.
Any help or advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, yes, I know exactly how you feel.
Just went through 7700 miles on high speed, and the most valued customer award at Flying J.
Because it will substantially decrease your mpg.
Two things are important:

You have to make sure nothing else than the controllers malfunction causes the issue.
Every thing ( such as defect coolant sensor, loose wire, not well connected wire inside the 6 prong plug, relay in your electrical bay, )will set the fan in high speed , this as a default setting.
So make the 6 prong plus is connected well and clean on the inside.
After you have done that you can suspect the SD the be the problem.
Kevin ordered mine and it has a delivery time of 6 weeks.
If you go to a local SD distributor you might shave a few days of that timing.( such as Berendsen Fluid Power) Now if you locate the controller ( most likely drivers side right behind the mud flap) you might see the label on the controller.

Should read 1090411 Voltage.... Serial nr ... SW Parameter settings.....
Take it to place where you want to buy it .
Once you get it, install or have it installed.
Butch says , takes about 30 minutes.
Remember, that is what worked for years, and a new one should work again.
I was assured by several good friend having had the same problem, its nothing to be frustrated about.
Plus if you find the Sauer Danfoss 1090411 specifications.png on their web, you will see what the settings are Sensor 1 = the coolant
Sensor 2 = charge air temp

Aux 1 switch=the dryer from your coach AC.

I have a similar problem with the fan on high. Premier Motor Coach in Tucson found the connections were the problem. Reattached all connections and secured the wire so the did not stress the connection and all is well. This eliminated the need to replace fan controller.

I bought my controller through Berendson Fluid Power and they told me that the part number indicates the engine that it is programmed for by the factory. I have generally been happy with CAT service centers but you do have to ask them about their level of experience with Motor homes. I drove from San Diego to the CAT dealer in Eugene OR (in high fan mode) to have the problem diagnosed. The dealers in between did not even want to look at the problem. The Eugene CAT dealer was very familiar with the procedures for testing the Controller; which doesn't help you very much in Texas.
