Tire Blowout causes major accident for an American Eagle

Amazing how the two people walked away from this accident. This is a reminder that we should complete a walk around inspection always before leaving on any trip.

That is why we change out out tires due to age - not milage. Makes a set of tires look very cheap.

Over the years I've had serious problems with BF Goodrich, Firestone, Good Year (the most often) and many other brands of tires.
Who's left? Michelin? I've seen lots of complaints for them too, had a set on an SUV that wore out in 20,000 miles. So no brand is perfect.
All we can do is inspect, inspect, inspect and make sure the air pressures are right and regardless of what they look like replace them at 5-7 years. As long as you don't hit something that damages the tire any name brand will give good service unless there is an unusual defect.

My Toyos were four years old; I checked the tire pressure in the morning on both days of travel, both days the pressure was to the required pressure (120 pounds) for the front tires. Luckily we were not hurt but it cost my insurance company $32,000.00.

That is why I say "Just say No to Toyo"

Walt, with all due respect where does it state "required " pressure 120 lbs. I hate to beat this to death on another round of tires and inflation lbs.
Question, your front axle weight requiring that number of lbs is ? Two (2) front tires at one time...is that right ? Nearly all of the tire company web sites have blowout cause as #1 factor is under inflation.

The placard on the left side of the driver's seat gives the tire pressure. No I blew out one tire on each of two days. The first one in New Mexico the second one in Arizona both on Interstate 40.

With all due respect where abouts in the report does it say anything other than the motorhome had a blowout?
So why does everyone jump to the conclusion that the tires were this or that brand or over or under inflated?
Maybe, just maybe, this proor couple check their tires every day. Have the 'best' brand of tires. Just maybe they hit some rubbish on the road. Just maybe it was a blow out caused by something other than the tire itself. Maybe is was just an 'accident'.

Why start a 'let's blame the tire' discussion? Again!
But then I'm not a tire expert and I can't see all these detail on the two pictures in the report Maybe other can.

With respect.

Bruce:

With respect I don't think you read the posts - at least not mine. For myself I merely mentioned how important it is to check your tires and that any brand can have problems. How does that get turned into blaming that particular driver of anything or any brand of tire? I too feel sorry for their misfortune and am delighted they were not seriously hurt.

I don't think of this forum as a blame game. With all the posts here many offering fact based information. Tires really get beat to death with pages of information. Most of us will agree by NOW that coaches need to be weighed, ride height adjusted, front ends aligned and tire pressure based on tire size plus actual axle weight.
On the road I still see the professional drivers at rest areas doing a walk around, doing the tire bar thump test. CCO offers info to probably just a small percentage of owners. I know that anywhere in North America with a lap-top, Wi-Fi help is there. And it's free.

All we can do is offer good advice.

Do we know why the tire failed? I have had two Goodyears, new, properly inflated fail on my SOB. (At different times)

It would be just as logical to conclude "Just say no to I 40."
