Dropping generator

Yahoo Message Number: 67807
Generator starts up well, runs for about a minute, then shuts down. Code indicates a cooling level problem, however the fluid levels seem good. Tech suggests it's a sending unit, and recommends dropping the unit to replace the sending unit. (Going off of a bad cell phone connection conversation. Will stop by and see him in the AM, to be sure I heard him correctly.)
We're running new fuel lines now, and doing normal generator maintenance.
If we end up dropping the unit, what other services do you recommend we do at this time?

This is on a 2004 unit, with about 400 hours on the clock.

Thanks,
Smitty

I would eliminate every other possibility before dropping the genny. I dropped mine a few years (Cummins Coach-Care in Albuquerque) to replace bad injectors. There is a steel crossbar on my 2004 Allure that runs under the genny that makes it a very difficult to get it out. The only options we could figure were to cut the crossbar or to trim the lower cap section so the genny could be moved forward and manuevered over the bar. I called Country Coach and they recommended cutting the bar.
(Later Lazydays told me they could get it out without major surgery, but it was a bitch, and they wouldn't necessarily recommend it). What should have been about a 1.5 hour job ran over 8 hours. The mechanic spent a lot of time cursing the CC engineer who designed the installation. He re-installed the steel cross bar with some steel angle brackets that later failed. I replaced his brackets with bolted 1/4" steel brackets that should last and will make any future genny maintenance a little easier.

This is a project to be avoided, if at all possible. Good luck!

Thanks to all of you that have sent me emails, and replied...
Those of you that found the fuel filter, or fuel line replacements seemed to get things going for you. What sort of error codes were you seeing? Mine is indicating a temperature sending unit that has gone South. Does not seem related to fuel? (Doing the fuel line anyways. But the tech was pretty positive it was either the temperature/cooling level sending unit.)

Are the error codes known to be sometimes off?

Thanks,
Smitty

Mine did something similar to this last spring except after one minute it would shut down with an over temp code. I did end up having a Cummins service center drop the unit out and they ended up replacing the sensor and a control board. While it was out I also had them completely flush and clean the radiator as it had never been done. To my knowledge they did nothing with the fuel line as it would not run on their test bench. I don't know the answer to this but, is it possible, if you suspect fuel line, to attach a new temporary line and feed from a separate fuel source to see if it will run?

Regards,

Steve

Uncommanded shutdown, or words to that effect. Symptoms were the same. Question: what kind of load do you have on the genset when it quits? (Mine ran fine with no load, but quit shortly after loading it up.)

Hello Mike,

I had to drop my generator last year at Cummings in Oregon and all they had to do was cut a nice rectangular piece out of the bottom of the front cap. It was easy and you cann't even see it unless you bend down. I think it also gives more air to the gen.

Seemed to shut down before the load would kick in, but can't say that as a positive. I know for sure, the AC never got started up.

Thanks again to all that posted and sent me info. I'm going ahead with the dropping of the generator. We'll service everything in question while it is out. The cut to the front lower cap was what the tech said too. Did locate the Barricade Gates line, and having them run to the Hydro Hot and Generator.
While I did read some reports of codes that were sometimes confused or wrong, the bulk of the info was this is a part that needs replacing. I'm OK with that, and knew without the generator slide, the labor would be higher to work on the generator in this coach.

Best to all,
Smitty
