Select Comfort Bed

We have a Select Comfort King-size mattress (dual chamber air bed) in our home -- love it. Thinking of installing a 60x75 Short Queen in our 2002 Allure.

Any comments about this or other brands for a RV? It won't have rounded corners -- is that much of a problem or inconvenience?

Do you have to let some air out before going up to a high mountain pass?

We too had a Select Comfort King size with dual chambers.
YES, Herb, you must let air out before going up any mountains or you will burst a chamber and it will not be covered by the warranty. We decided to go with the Tempurpedic mattress and love it even better than the Select Comfort - and there are no worries about forgetting to let air out before we travel.

Herb,

We, too, have a Select Comfort bed at home and wanted the same comfort in our Beaver. We bought our Feather Edge mattress from RV-Tech at http://www.rv-tech.com/ for several reasons over the Select Comfort. The Feather Edge has two compressors, one mounted within the foam edge on each side of the mattress. Of course, there are two compartments and each inflates from its own compressor. I've seen Select Comforts in coaches and the storage of the compressor and routing of the plumbing can be challenging. Not a problem with the Feather Edge. The Feather Edge also inflates and deflates much more quickly than the Select Comfort. We were also able to get an RV Queen mattress from Curt for just over $400 where Select Comfort wanted about $650. The compressor on our Select Comfort died and was replaced under warranty. No problems with the Feather Edge.
If I were to buy a new mattress for the house today, it would be a Feather Edge!

I am glad this subject came up. The mattress in my coach is really bad.
Has a big lump in the middle so I always feel like I am rolling out of bed.
I have been trying to figure out what to replace it with--and wondering about the curves at the end of the bed rather than square corners. It seems like it would be rather simple to have a piece cut to attach to each corner to make it square. Has anybody done this? Any other suggestions on mattresses to try?

Glen,

There are 5 different mattress shown on the website you gave. Which one do you have? Did you have an opportunity to see the others? How difficult is it to let the air out to travel and then re-inflate it?

Ree,

We chose the "Dove" since it was the closest to the Select Comfort Elite Traditional that we have at home. No, I did not see any of them prior to purchase and have not seen any of the other models. It is very easy to let the air down (no need to let it all out) when you expect to gain over 4,000 feet in elevation in one day. Just push the "Soft" side of the rocker switches on the controls and the air will release in less than five seconds. It will re-inflate just as quickly - much faster than the Select Comfort.
I'm told that they can make any special size that you may need. I'd suggest that you give Curt a call and discuss your needs with him. He's a great guy to work with and he can suggest what he feels is best for you.

No, I do not represent RV-Tech, I'm just a happy customer.

Was your original mattress curved on the ends or square? If it was curved, how did you handle the new mattress?
I am going to get a new mattress ASAP--just have to figure out what, when, and how--and I guess stay in one place long enough to have it shipped to me.

I will address this message to all of the coach owners. I sell air beds and I have been a dealer for 7 years for Feather Edge made in Nevada. I sell these beds for my cost plus 10%. If anyone is interested, you can either email me or call me at 760 497-7213. I will be happy to give you info and references ( many owners). I have sold more than 400 beds by word of mouth. Candy

Do you attend any of the CC Rallys? We will be at the York PA Rally in July and would like to see a Feather Edge bed if possible. We have been considering the purchase of a Select Confort or Temperpedic Mattress and would like to see the Feather Edge before we decide what to buy.

Last December, we got a "Space Age" foam Tempur-Pedic mattress. They give you 90 days to get use to it and we are still getting use to ours. Not sure if the aches and pains are from the firmness of the mattress, or just old ago. Have to admit though that I'm sleeping a little better at night now. It is a full size queen and sticks out a few inches more then the original foam mattress but doesn't seem to be a problem. It is very heavy though (couple 100 lbs) and makes it a little harder to lift when we want to get into the storage are under the bed.
Friends of ours have an air mattress in their coach and they said that the air pressure changes everytime they go up-down mountains and they have to add or decrease air then.

Another option to consider for a mattress--

I replaced my short queen with a regular queen size flo-bed latex layered mattress. It is on the website www.flobeds.com . It is SO comfortable and I have rheumatoid arthritis and had trouble sleeping on other mattresses before this one. They explain on the website about the latex that is used and how long it lasts and warranty and all-- it is all very good and I checked opinion sites about it as well. I will tell you that it can be tailored for each side of the mattress to each of your needs for support differences if you are a couple. That is because it is sold in parts... layers go from super firm to soft. You construct it by choosing the firmness layers you want. You can trade replace different firmness layers as you try it out over the 90 day trial period until you get it right.
They ship it to you in pieces, wherever you are. It is a snap to put together- nothing to it. It comes with an outer mattress cover with a zippered top. You have several options and you can make it thicker than the standard by adding another layer like I did to make it absolutely luxurious. It is NOT tempurpedic, however you can have a layer of that as well if you want it- I did not. I heard tempurpedic is not that comfortable and it is very heat retentive. The latex is incredibley comfortable and supportive no matter how you sleep and takes the stress off of pressure points like

shoulders and hips... I cannot get over it! Latex is sooo wonderful!
There are solid sewn latex mattresses out there like "Nature's rest" that will give you an idea what these mattresses feel like- but they are much more expensive.

The only 2 negatives, are it is heavier and I needed to get new struts that could handle the weight for the engine cover- no problem there. Easy fix. The other thing is not a big deal either-- These mattresses

do not have stiff sides so when you sit on the edge, you tend to sink down more than a coil mattress. So you have to scoot further back not to fall off!

But these this mattress will last forever and will go with me to the end of my days! I never want another kind of mattress- seriously. I cannot get over the difference!

You can contact me if you need further details or have questions picking out the firmness- these people are really nice at the business as well.

P.S. The overhang was no big deal for the mattress...
