PTO pump

We have a new member in our Southeast Country Coachers club who needs to add the Chelsea wet kit to his PTO. He does not want to mate worn pump teeth to the new female splines in the wet kit. He needs the same hydraulic pump I replaced in my coach which is Sauer-Danfoss 550139087159160. In my case I replaced the whole pump, but since then I discovered that a gear shaft replacement is available.
Some one at the distributor, Berendsen Fluid Power, recently told me it is not a good idea to replace the gear shaft in a gear pump because the parts will not mate well due to one being old and the other new. I think he was talking about the actual pump impeller parts, but I question whether the gear shaft would be involved in pumping, but would rather just mesh with another gear within the pump. The question then arises, "why do they sell the gear shaft if it is not a good idea to replace it?"
I'd like some informed opinions on what I was told about the replacement gear shaft.
I believe the history on these Sauer-Danfoss pumps was that Lee Zaborowski found out that some of these pumps were discoverd in the basement of the Aimes, Iowa Sauer Danfoss facility. Reportedly they were left over from Dynamatics Corp which Sauer-Danfoss had aquired. Several of us were able to get these pumps right away out of the Aimes inventory.
Now I'm told that shortly after we got the pumps, the people in Aimes scrapped the remaining pumps. What a shame. No inventory is available even at Dynamatics in the UK and they have to be built to order which takes 12 weeks. Then there is shipping time and expense to the US.
If anyone has information on availability of these pumps in the US, I would like to know that too.

I would grab the replacement shaft kit and go for it. The pump side has been running in hydraulic oil and should have very little, if any wear. The shaft drives the actual gears that do the pumping, those are a matched set and need replaced as a set. The person you talked to was probably on the supply side and not the mechanical side. I agree with your thoughts in paragraph #2.

George I have been able to get custom pumps to replace most all S-D pumps in 8 to 10 days time to shipping. I will see if this is available and let you know

I had the pump rebuilt with the replacement shaft, so far so good. It was either that or find a complete pump. The pump shaft was about 25 to 35% warn with only 14K miles.

Thanks to everyone who replied. Since I posted, Brendenson Fluid Power tells me there is no replacement pump shaft available, but I don't believe it. I have the part number at home (I'm traveling). I learned one was available from a supplier in Ireland back in 2009 when I replaced my pump.

Gil, if you have the shaft part number, could you send it to me?

Another possibility, have the splines built back up and machined. Will take a good machine shop with the right equipment. Use to be involved with this a lot in repair work. Can't remember the name of the process, built it sprays molten metal on the shaft to build it up. This would be a last ditch repair. A replacement pump would be better as I have seen some shafts crystalize and brake from this process. Then have seen air brake S cam's built up numerous times by welding, turned down and used over and over.

Think letting John find you a new pump is the best way to go, if you cannot find a shaft. Some things it is not worth trying to save money on. Power steering is one of those.
