Tires in Las Vegas

I don't recommend things just report when we get exceptional service. That's what we got at Ted Wiens Firestone on Blue Diamond Road in Las Vegas (just west of I15). Bought 4 Toyo's, best price in Las Vegas, better than the price I got in Amarillo. Service was fast, they replaced the valve stems with the ones I wanted, removed my old SmartTire on all 6 wheels, balanced all the wheels and put the balance weights on the inside of my outside duals. The reason that I mention this is because when we purchased tires in N Nevada from a well know tire supplier, they used varied valve stem lengths and put the balance weights on the outside of my outside duals, looked crappy. Not much I could do once everything was mounted. I'm happy with the service and the price at Ted Wiens Firestone. When they pulled the front tires they had a mechanic pull the right drum and lubricate the rollers, thereby ridding me of the "clunk" I had in the right front wheel when I applied the brakes, no charge. (I tipped the guy).

I am not the one you are asking, but I bought Toyo to save more than $100 per tire. Mine have provided almost 6 years of dependable service, so far. When I installed them I found improved ride and handling over my old Goodyears. I plan to replace them with more Toyos later this year.

These posts about Toyo replacement tires reminded of the tire survey here about a month ago. The question was "What tires are you currently running on your coach?"

The response of 126 of us about replacement tires was -

Michelin - 66(52%)

Toyo - 26(21%)

Goodyear - 22(17%)

Others - 12(10%)

Not to be a naysayer- BUT, I had a flat (on the toad) and took the problem tire to this same Ted Wiens Firestone.... where the manager told me the tire was ruined and could not be fixed. He also told me that that particular tire was no longer made and I'd have to replace at least two; a pair for the front or rear. The flat had not been driven on so there was no apparent damage beyond the fact that it was flat. I declined his "fix" and took the tire to the Costco - where they fixed it in a few minutes! That was a year ago and the tire is still running perfect!

We've got more than 40,000 miles on our Toyos..... many of those at top speed. I love them and when the time comes will replace them with more Toyos - if available.

Brad It might surprise you to know that some of us like TOYOS. Iv'e had satisfactory service and true wear on mine for over 40,000 miles. Just replaced all six with new TOYOS, why change to an unknown. Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111

What's not to like about the Toyo's? Mine are OEM with 42k miles, have loads of tread left, ride and track fine (means I've adapted to any quirkiness), sidewalls are in great shape and all 6 hold pressure consistently. It's a binary decision like when you come to a fork in the road. If you go left, you'll never know what it was like to go to the right. By the time you come back and do go right, you'll have forgotten what it was like on the left.

The only feedback I received concerning tires was at a recent RV boot camp put on by Escapees - they suggested not purchasing Toyos just because Toyo has stopped making RV tires and they do not provide back up support when anything happens with their tires. jan

I have Toyos on my 2006 Jeep Cherokee and they have been great. jan

Most of the tire issues were focused on the 275R70 tire. It was used mostly on Intrigues and Allures in the last half of the 90's. It was undersized and overrated for the job at hand. One of the issues was the single slide coaches were extremely heavy on the left front and the tires were being inflated for the total weight of the axle and not the weight of the left front. Another issue was on the 40' Allures and Intrigues there was to much storage space underneath and over the sofas and the entire front of the coach could be overloaded. At the 2000 Home Coming rally Larry Sherwood had a crew that did nothing but go around and help people repack there coaches after it was determined there was an over weight issue. I had 3 sets of front tires replaced and two sets of duals replaced because of mandatory recalls. The 40' coaches got bumped up one size to 275R80's. In 2002 I replaced my Toyo's with 275 R80 Continentals and the ride improved tremendously. I no longer had to carry 125 lbs of air pressure up front, which made for a quieter much more enjoyable ride. Now I did have an issue with one 12R on my newer Intrigue and wished for the ride I had with the Continentals on the Allure. So at 4.5 years we dumped the Toyo's and went with the Michelin 12R. A much quieter ride and more comfortable at the same inflation pressure. Though I will have to admit after 20,000 plus miles the Michelins firm up a bit, as do all tires.

We ran into the "Toyo Issue" back in 2008 when replacing the front tires. I called Dickman Tire and they said they would not put Toyos on a National product. I did see a memo fro Toyo to that effect on line. Called Toyo, told them that I didn't have a slide, measured the weight on all wheels and was not over the tires rating on any axle, they said there should be no problem. The tire supplier in Amarillo, AtoZ Tire, never heard of the memo and said they would stand behind the tire.

Some more comments on tires (as it pertains to us). Note that I said the we don't (ever) recommend, just give inputs.
Our history with Toyos: Coach came with Toyos, 10R22.5. Had a blowout, actually a slow leak through the sidewall after about 2 years on the OEM tires. Toyo said that the tire was externally damaged, I disagreed, looked like a defect on the inside of the tire that did not go all the way through and was molded into the rubber, working did not pursue, bought a new tire. Had another tire go flat at about 7 years, looked like external damage, tires were 7 years old, replaced. While in Vegas, lost the tread on half of a tire, down to the steel, no blowout, tires 7+ years old, replaced. Bought 4 tires at Ted Wiens. Probably ran 150 miles on that tire before discovering.
Looked at Toyos, Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear. The Goodyear tires for our coach were 3" in diameter smaller, crossed them out, Bridgestone and Continental were not available in a timely manner, so nixed them and they were more expensive than the Toyos, not as much as the Michelins. Cost wise 4 Michelins were $2400 OTD and the Toyos were $1650 OTD. Talked to a guy at Dickman Tire (about Tire Monitoring) and then asked him about his opinion on Michelin vs. Toyos. The tread of the Toyos we replaced was still very good, tires just old. His comment was since we are not wearing the tires out and we've had reasonably good luck with them, the Toyos sound good. Decided on the Toyos for that reason. Over the years we've heard "horror stories" on just about every tire out there, ya just don't know the "whole story".
Not an expert on tires but being over 65, and having 2+ vehicles since I was 22, bought a lot of tires and dealt with a bunch of tire dealers. A number of tire service places have rules about repairing tires. If a puncture is a certain distance from the sidewall, they will not repair it. If a tires has been driven flat, they will not repair it. We've dealt with Discount tire (American Tire) for years and also have experienced exception service and that's their policy, personally I think it's a good one.
Anyway that's my 2+ cents worth. Get 5 RVers in a room ya got at least 6 opinions.

I've had Toyos, Good Years and Michelins. I have been happiest with the Michelins.

Depending on when your 04 was built, you are pushing 7+ years and you might want to consider replacing them. I had a failure at 6.5 which caused a lot of damage to the driver side rear. No cracks, sidewall looked good, tread came off the tire! Only about one k miles since tires were inspected by tire shop.

Thanks for sharing! I just re-looked at the 02/09 Plackard on our 99 Allure and and the Recieved date 6/07 and the former owner replaced with Goodyears back in 05. Tires next year. BTW we have steel rims and the last three years run 115 on all six. Heat gun all tires at rest stops no problems yet. Have on order Pressure/Temp monitor. Safty First. Again check NHTSA website on your coach fellow owner's. Ken 99 Allure 30356.

I posted the Toyo Tire recall notice in the file section. I found it on Toyo's website, it's the first file on the RV link.
I needed new tires (Toyos on my 2003 Lexa were dated 2002, and had a fair bit of sidewall cracking). After doing some research, including having Bob Dickman Tire in Junction City call Michelin on the difference between XZE and XZE*, I went with 6 new Michelin XZE* 12R22.5's on my rear axles.
Fabulous job done by Redburn tire in Phoenix. Richard the service manager is amazing, stopped by to pay him, he has 25 service trucks going, knows exactly what's going on with each in his head, knew exactly what I wanted re valve stems etc. (I've ordered the TST 507 system but didn't have it at the time), and the service truck even made a pre-visit to check out the wheels, stems, etc. before the install visit, to ensure they did it right the first time (coach was at Freightliner Phoenix for a new radiator).
For me, reading the notice from Toyo that they recommended NOT using Toyo's on any Country Coach, plus the positive recommendations of the Michelin's, were enough for me to choose the Michelin's.
Of course, much better ride than the old hard Toyo's, and I like the factory half-siping on the tread, esp. with cold and occasional snow in the Northwest.
