Clear Coat Peeling and Roof Top Wrinkled

Hi Folks,

In message 5016, a way was proposed to stop the peeling of clear coat at the roof top edge. I was surprised to see that in the preparation for spraying, that the clear coat had peeled away about 2 - 3 inches and more at the rear corners. Also, it was yellowed at just below the peeling edge. After light buffing with fine steel wool and wiping off, a good lacquer was lightly applied from a spray can. Only the front edge of the coach is not peeling, where clear coat was applied about 2 feet back.

This peeling condition should not be occuring. I wonder what CCI did or didn't do for this to be occuring. I wonder what effect the floating roof has, if any, on this condition occurring. The roof on this coach is wrinkled and loose. CCI stated this is the way they build them.

Anyone else with this condition might look to see if their top is wrinkled. Any insight on this conditon would be appreciated.

Peeling clear coat is not CCI's fault, it's ours for not reading the manual and letting the roof go. I did nothing to our roof for 2 years and almost had the same problem. Then while we were at Lazy Days, Tim Reed called the white streeks to our attention and we corrected the problem. This is not unusal, our 96 Safari roof was painted the same way and I believe most of the industry does it this way. The one good thing with CC is that there are no cross seams in the roof. On our safari and I believe most other coaches there is a front and rear seam which need caulking to keep them from leaking.

Now that we have our roof in shape it is easy to keep it waxed.

First of all you cannot correct peeling clear coat, you need to catch it before it starts. Having said that the following is what we did to our roof after 2 years of almost not doing anything and seeing white streaks over the sides of our Magna. We did wash our roof about once every 6 months but I never read the manual on how to care for the roof, I thought that part was not important.
Most of what we do now is in the manual and fortunately we never lost our clear coat. To bring the roof back and save the clear coat we did the following:
1. Wash the roof
2. Buff the roof with an electric buffer and an automotive cleaning compound to get rid of the chalking, if the chalking remains you have done nothing because according to CC the chalking causes the clear coat to peel.
3. Apply a good UV wax.
4. About a month later apply a coat of 303, the 303 will not shine a lot but on the roof who cares, I have been told by waxing professionals that 303 is a great UV protectant.
5. Now I wash the roof regularly when I wash the coach and I will retreat the
roof every 4 or 5 months. Of course I must confess that I did not do all this work my self and I don't intend to do it in the future. I usually hire someone to wash and wax the coach whenever it needs the work and when we are in a cg that has someone doing this. When we go into Lazy Days (the Crown Club) we get a free wash and I hire the guy to wax the roof, we also get free cookies, a free campsite and a service writer who comes to us and takes our coach in for service. Of course you also get LDs free lunch and breakfast, it's not great but OK for nothing. Oh I know we are paying for this somewhere but the people who come off the street do not get this service and they pay the same price.
Besides, having a professional do our maintenance make coaching more fun. "Be nice to your roof" is the title of an article I wrote for the Country Cousins News Letter, it contained everything I wrote above, except for the part about LDs. and most of this advice came from Tim Reed who is CCIs main mechanic at Lazy Days. He pointed out our roof problem one day at LDs.

I think the various CC Clubs need to work together to get CC Corp. to reimburse owners for some of the recurring problems. For example, a lot of people have the corrosion/paint bubbling problem on their doors. I also know multiple coaches having problems with their dual pane windows. CC said they will fix the door at no charge if the coach is brought to Oregon or if the door is shipped to them. I would estimate the cost to ship the door from Virginia round trip would probably be $5-600, and the coach would be without a door for at least a month. Taking the coach to Oregon is no easy feat for people living in the East. The fuel cost alone would be in excess of $1,100 @$1.50 per gallon. CC shipped me a new skin for the door, but Bill Plemmons wants $1,400.00 to fix the door and Creative Coach wants $1,800.00. My friend also has a 1999 Intrigue and all of his windows have to be replaced and that is costing him $1,500 installation plus the cost to ship 13 windows from Oregon to Indiana which I would guess will cost $5-600.00.

I noticed you have a 32'. I am curious about your driving. We have a 32' and a lot of wandering and CCI has been working at it for several weeks. How's yours? Have you put any aftermarket steering components? What pressure do you keep in your tires? On this last visit CCI put 75#'s in all tires, based on weight.

We are very interested in your problems with wandering. We have a new 36' Allure and have the same complaint. We are headed to CCI in several days for this and other problems. If they can't or won't fix it we are going to start with 8 Blistein shocks, sway bars front and rear, and replacement of the front Toyo tires. We have had similar problems with Toyos on the front of trucks.

Please let us know what you learn.
We would also like to know how you like your 32'. That is what we were interested in but were told there weren't any available.

Hi,

We bought ours last Oct at the Portland RV Show. We have previously driven a 34' Journey Freightliner Chassis, and a 38' Ultimate Freedom Spartan Chassis. Both drove easier than our Allure, but neither was even close in quality to the Allure. We love everything about our motorhome, and based on our past experience we are confident that CCI will be able to fix our concerns. As many have stated on this forum, lots of the problems we've had were with suppliers, like Hurricane Heat and HWH. Iwill say that lowering the air pressure from 100 to 75 has helped quite a bit, I would say about a 50% improvement. Please keep us posted on your progress.

I have 1 2000 Intrigue 40" 11142 and spent the better part of a year chasing the problems you describe. The first thing I would share with you is that you are making a big mistake enlisting CC to help solve the problem. Every time they got involved, the problems got worse and they said they made adjustments which I found out later were never done. I am convinced that your problems will improve greatly if you take the following steps: 1) have the coach weighed (fully loaded -- including passengers) and determine the four corner weights. You should have a Toyo brochure (black in color) that gives you the formula to come up with the correct tire pressures, 2) have the ride height adjusted so that the coach is lower in the front than the rear to the greatest degree possible (the CC customer service people can tell you the maximum and minimum settings), 3)get the front shocks adjusted to the stiffest setting, 4) have the front end alinged, 5) if you are still dissatified, replace the front tires with Michelin XZ2 "steering" tires.

When all this was done, my steering was still responsive and the rig does not just plow down the highway in a straight line -,you still have to steer it, BUT the wander and darting to the right went away (which were my big issues).

If you are going to Junction City, I would enlist the help of Carrier and Son near the Eugene airport to work through the changes. Best to call for an appointment now.

I had a loose steering, wandering, pulling to the right, bottoming out problem with my 2000 CC. I spent many hours (days) in repair facilities in Oregon and California, with no resolve UNTIL I took the coach to Kaiser Wheel & Brake in Eugene, Oregon. 18 months of frustration was diagnosed in 15 minutes! Dale
