HWH Air Leveling Specs/Capability

Anyone know where I can find the specs/capability of the air leveling system. Recently I parked on a spot that was not very severe and the systems tried to level the coach, but after 10 minutes or so, it gave up and the warning light came on and the systems quit trying. How much differential from front to rear or side to side is there? 12 inches? Less?

Often sites have an uneven surface if not paved. I sometime put a small level on the floor and move back and forth to find the most level spot. The coach usually will level up once I use that trick.

The side to side difference is a function of the stroke of the jacks. Unless you have optional air leveling.

Hi Craig and Kathy, We have had a similar problem with our 2007 Inspire. I found that if you do NOT dump the air before starting the level process, the system has a lot more "travel" available to compensate for sloped ground. Especially if you are dealing with a low in the front condition. When you dump the air first, the only travel available is what the small compressor can raise the front. If you do not, then the leveling system can dump air from the rear bags to help level. Let us know if this helped.

Suggest you keep your engine running while you level... The small auxillary compressor is used to maintain level while the HWH system is in "sleep mode"...

From the HWH SYSTEMS TEXT BOOK:

"The ignition key should be on with the engine running. Running the engine while leveling will provide a better air supply for leveling the vehicle."
"The auxillary compressor supplies air to the system for leveling when the system is in the "SLEEP" mode."

I don't know the specs for the air bag system but comparing my Magna air leveling to the jacks I had on my previous coach, I don't think the total throw of the air bag system is as great as the jacks and you will find more spots that you will not be able to level on.
I think a previous post says it best. Unless you have a need for the coach to be as low as possible after leveling, don't dump the air before leveling. This way, the system will dump air to drop the high side/end and not have to lift the coach with the small compressor. You will know much sooner if the system will be able to level the coach.
I think I was told that if you run the engine while trying to level, the HWH system will try to put the bags in travel position which will defeat the leveling process. I would like to know if this is true.

Not true Pete... When you level with the engine running (as recommended by HWH), the coach won't go back to "travel mode" until you press the "off" button on the HWH panel...

On my unit there is a 'Level Air' button in the upper left corner. You push it twice and sit back and it will level itself. Been doing it that way for 3 years and works every time, unless the site is too cockeyed. I'm sure this procedure, if memory serves me right, is in the manual.

Pete, I think there is about ten inches of leveling with air bags. Its a lot. One thing I learned is that at least my system does not like it when the rear is at the maximum extension. It will then re level a lot. You level initially with engine running.do not dump.

I want to thank everyone for their input. Since I have only owned the coach for 3 months, I am still learning. I am sure that I did NOT dump the air before I began the leveling process, and I did leave the engine running. Will see what happens next time.

I had been dumping the air as soon as I parked prior to levelling -- I will now just hit air to level it without dumping it all the way down first. thanks for the hint...

I have always leveled from travel height with the engine running for the past nine years.
However, recently, I have had success with first leveling the rig and then dumping some air.
The dump appears to be equal at all points and results in a level rig at a lower height.
I suspect if the dump of air were to be 100%, then the rig would again not be level, if the ground were not level.

On my 2000 Magna The Travel mode will activate by ether turning level to off position or when you shift your transmission in to a gear.

I stand corrected and thanks for clarifying this for me. After a re-read of my manual I see that the leveling system does need to be turned off and the ignition on or in the acc position for the travel light to be on. I assume if the travel light is on then the bags will be inflated. pete

My experience has been that if you engage the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral (engine running), then give the HWH system the command to "level" it will do so using the engine compressor system, which is much larger and faster than the little compressor in the bay. On my coach, the only time that little auxillary compressor comes on is when you are parked with the engine off and the system "wakes" out of its sleep mode to check and re-level the coach (every 30 minutes). Then the small compressor kicks in to provide the needed air to re-level. I never dump any air before leveling, but sometimes have had to manually add air to a low spot when the auto-level couldn't manage to get it level, due to excess slope. I hope this helps.

My experience with HWH leveling in our current CC -and former Foretravel ('94 Grandvilla 280)- echoes Paul's description exactly . Has worked quite well for me in both units...and I frequently dry camp at funky east coast/midwest fairgrounds where our AKC dog shows are held! Love this predictable leveling system.

The air bag travel mode only comes on automatically when you release the parking brake.

The travel light ( per HWH Rep at ralley's years ago right after I bought current coach) just show that the the bags are starting to be filled not that the bags are filled. It may take several minutes for the bags to fill to travel height.

Hope this clarifies this issue.
