Alternator-Duvac

Yahoo Message Number: 69712
My alternator failed. I had it rebuilt, reinstalled, but will not charge. It has the Duvac system which I understand must be excited externally to notify the alternator to charge. The rebuilder told me that when it failed it probably blew a fuse which must be replaced in order for the alternator to charge. The tachometer , and the voltmeter also does not work. I have looked and tested fuses and circuit breakers for two days and pushed all reset buttons to no avail. I cannot find the proper fuse. I understnd a separate wire can be run to the alternator, but, from where to where. I also have followed all schematics. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111

First check all small wire connectors. Look for bad wire or end. Make sure studs tight in body. Use volt meter on wires to check for voltage on all wires. Have found bad wires a lot.

Leonard is right on with broken wires.
Wires are protected with an outside coating to protect the stranded wires inside. If they can vibrate or shake the wires inside will break over a long period of time. When you look at the wire all looks fine...the problem.
You need to get a tester and check each wire running to the alternator. Most tech's will use a small pin to pass through the insulation somewhere close to the last mounting where the wires were secure. This can be a long time spent or you could get lucky. Most often the broken wire will be close to the alternator i.e. 3-4 inches. The connection at the alternator has the same problem as they look as connected but don't make 100% contact.
My son tells me his trunk lid will not open when pressing the button on the dash. Fuse is good and checked to be not the problem. When we opened the trunk with the key I saw the wires come out from under the deck lid and then curve around at about 60 deg. near the right hinge. These wires were wrapped in tape. Mike, then exposed the wires (4) and I asked him to tug on each wire gently where it curved. Watch for the movement on the insulation. The gray wire stretched when he pulled on both ends. Over a period of 100's of trunk openings this one wire broke inside on the taped bundle. That had been the stress point inside the protected wire group.
Long post .....but either you or some $100 per hour tech will do the same task to locate the problem.

Barrie,

If interested I'll send you a story (PDF File) of my alternator problems, it may help. I have an Allure so it may not be the same, but it worth a try. Mine works great now.

Jack: Thank you for the file. It has helped. My alternator is exactly the same as your drawing but I need the duvac because I have the battery isolator which I have also replaced. My alternator rebuilder has been telling me that a fuse has blown. I will recheck all fuses under the drivers seat again. Unfortunately nothing on my schematic is marked alternator exciter fuse, so I am assuming it is under the drivers seat close to the chasis batteries. I am going to storage now to check it out. Thank you much will let u know. Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111 PS If you have the exciter fuse wire number, please let me know.

Your right I think that fuse is in the battery compartment but It may be different on my coach. Good luck on the hunt. Will be interested in the results.
