Roof Air

We are getting ready for what is a long trip for us. ( 3 months ) I am going to change trans, hydraulic, and the water coolant ion the radiator. Is there anything else I should consider? We will be going into some warm areas, is there anything I should do to Roof Air?

A few basic items include:

>Clean/replace filter

While doing this, do a visual inspection for signs of loose ducts, leaking, etc. Sometimes snugging up the mounting bolts is a good idea, as they can vibrate loose over time. Not real tight, but good and snug (that's techie talk:)!).
Topside, remove the cover and inspect for nests, etc. Clean the fins, usally a good brushing will do this. Sometimes a washing is needed. If you feel comfortable playing with it, a little deeper in the unit is another filter - but it usually is only a problem/cleaning required, if used in real humid areas.
While the casing is off. Check for signs of age/stress cracking. I've found that a couple of inches of eterna bond tape on the inside, then poking thru the holes for the bolts, provides a good internal bit of added strength. (Lost one off of our 98 Bounder, so learned this trick the hard way...).
I'm sure other's will add items I missed, as I'm pretty much learning the ropes on AC's.

Have fun, and a great trip!

Stan,

There are two obvious service items to check, (1)make sure the air filters are clean and (2) have the freon levels check in both units. Also, make sure the thermistors are attached to the cooling fins.

One of our regulars mentioned the proper year and equipment needed (not much, thankfully) on an Acadia four down, maybe a year ago. I thought I saved that info, but no, cannot find it. Thanks.

I would also recommend you run both AC's on the generator for a while - - load it up - - to make sure it's up to the task.

Why in the world would you leave San Diego??

Thanks, Al, I could not remember who gave me such good info. I believe there were some years to avoid, until they got it working right?
I think I will go for a certified 2010, old enough to duck some of the heavier depreciation, and new enough so it has all the bells and whistles. I have finally decided to get rid of my play truck, a 1993 Land Cruiser. That thing put the Utility in Sport Utility, like a farm tractor. It still run well, has classic looks, and has been an old friend, and tows like a dream, but it cannot last forever. It has also been great as a gold digger repellent - a single guy living in a beautiful Country Coach needs some help, even at my seasoned age.

Thanks for any help.

If you haven't recently done so, lube the chassis, especially the drive shaft and brake slack adjusters. My drive shaft takes a lot of grease after 5-8K miles or so. Also, check oil level of the front wheel bearings.

Have been very satisfied with the Acadia. When you get all set up I can give you a part number from NAPA for the fuse you need to pull. Longer shank so it's easy to pull.

Al,

Thanks for offering this information. We have an 08 Enclave, and it tows very well. But I have to use a pair of plyers to get the fuse out and would be happy to know the NAPA part number for the fuse.

Some people install a switch so they don't have to pull the fuse.

Mike, I have the old short fuse inside the new long fuse box in one of the storage compartments in the back of the Acadia. My wife drove the Acadia on a business trip out of town. Probably would not be real happy to go out to the car from the motel room to get the part number tonight.
I'll post the number when she gets back Wed. morning.
I checked into a switch or relay but was not available as the fuse we pull is rated at 50 if I recall. Of course it could be done, but had other things to do and wasn't a big deal to pull the fuse.

Thanks, Al. I agree about it not being a big deal, and I will appreciate knowing the number whenever it works.

Al, another question - can both the fwd and the awd be flat towed? I tried to ask a dealer, and got nowhere. Maybe Blue Ox would have a clue. I will check their web site, but someone whose "been there, done that".

Jack, yes both can be pulled flat down. And as others have stated they pull very well. Installed the Blue Ox Bar, along with the light kit they have. Turn key to first notch, trans in neutral, pull fuse. Good to go AL
