A few basic items include:

While doing this, do a visual inspection for signs of loose ducts, leaking, etc. Sometimes snugging up the mounting bolts is a good idea, as they can vibrate loose over time. Not real tight, but good and snug (that's techie talk:)!).
Topside, remove the cover and inspect for nests, etc. Clean the fins, usally a good brushing will do this. Sometimes a washing is needed. If you feel comfortable playing with it, a little deeper in the unit is another filter - but it usually is only a problem/cleaning required, if used in real humid areas.
While the casing is off. Check for signs of age/stress cracking. I've found that a couple of inches of eterna bond tape on the inside, then poking thru the holes for the bolts, provides a good internal bit of added strength. (Lost one off of our 98 Bounder, so learned this trick the hard way...).
I'm sure other's will add items I missed, as I'm pretty much learning the ropes on AC's.
Have fun, and a great trip!
