Looking for a Nomad controller

Yahoo Message Number: 70351
Hi folks

I have an older Motosat antenna dish that was installed in July 2002. Motosat told me that the contoller that came with it is obsolete and is not comatable with the newer recievers. Before I buy a new one I thought I would check here and ask if anyone has a later model Nomad cotroller collecting dust and would like to get rid of it? I have never used the satellite dish since I bought the coach in 2004. Thanks.

Larry,

Are you looking for a controller that does not require the serial connection to the receiver?

I'm not sure. The tech told me that my old controller has the RCA connectors on it and the Dish reciever will not plug into it. It does have a black jack-type connector labled "Input from Reciever." I'm guessing that is the serial connector you're talking about and if so, the answer to your question is yes, I need the contoller that doesn't require the serial connection to the reciever.
I also have a flat green connector with 8 pins and another with 2 pins (etc) Thanks

I recommend that you get a controller with the memory card on the front. The software has to be updated on the Motosat units once in a while. It is much easier to update with the removable memory card.
I put a new controller and hi def dish on my coach about a year ago.

Problem is that the older antenna isn't compatible with the new controllers. I just went through this, it isn't a cheap fix. Check the wiring harness that goes from the controller to the antenna. If it has 8 wires in it, you can upgrade the controller and the antenna without having to pull a new control cable. That is your savings.
I just upgraded two weeks ago from an old antenna to HD. Having no need of the old receiver and controller, they went in the dumpster at Oregon Motorcoach.

Since Motosat is still selling the Executive dish, I have to wonder if there isn't another way to make the new 8 wire controller work with the older dishes.

Well, shucks! You mean I have to buy another antenna too? Motosat didn't tell me that. This is getting expensive. Maybe I should just by a tripod antenna for a couple hundred bucks? Thanks

Unless you want to go to HD, you do not have to get another antenna. I replaced my original Sony receiver and Executive controller with a RCA receiver and Nomad controller. It works just fine with the old dish.

I may have one of these controllors in my storage if you are still in need.

I have upgraded from the old serial connection controller to the New Nomad controller.

If you are only wanting just regular satalite tv (non HD) all you need is 7 control wires. Only if you need HD tv do you use the 8th wire. The 8th wire is for controling the skew of the dish to be able to recieve HD TV.
I also wanted to upgrade to a DVR. You need a dual output lnb. to be able to use a dvr. The Motostate Exective has the capablity of dual output . All you have to do is run 2 tv cables to the dvr.

Thanks Al.. I have the old RCA reciever and Nomad controller. We don't care about HD that much, but to get Dish pay-as-you go, they tell me I have to have their SK 1000 reciever which isn't compatible with the old Nomad controller.

I'm wondering if I can use Dish's SK 1000 reciever with my old Nomad controller for SD only? Can live without HD for the moment.

Get as much detail information as you can about your equipment and call Motosat and ask for technical support. They will want model numbers and maybe serial numbers. I don't know if there is a model number on your dish, but if you describe it they will probably figure it out. Ask them what your options are, and ask about the 8 wire controller on the 7 wire dish.
You may some different parts for your dish if it was on DirecTV before and you want to use Dish now.

After I bought my tripod antenna for about $75, I found out that DirecTV will give you one if it is necessary to get their service. My roof top one will not work under trees, so I needed the tripod.

I mispoke. I have the Motosat controller, not the Nomad.

Your best bet is to call Motosat in Salt Lake City 801-509-9755.
They can tell you what will work and what will not, then direct you to an authorized installer near you.

I was told that the Nomad will work with any receiver.

The Nomad is a model made by the Motosat company.

The Nomad is a line of controllers. The original Nomad all the way up to the current Nomad SD2. You need to be more specific as to which version or model Nomad. I think that there have been at least 4 different ones.

Humm,

Let me try to get myself out of trouble here. My original Motosat controller doesn't have a name on it. It also doesn't have any buttons. It has an 8 wire interface, and came with an RCA receiver, and the Executive dish when I bought my coach 2 years ago. I believe that these are the original components that came with the coach. The controller needs a serial connection to the receiver to operate.
The Nomad SD2 that I purchased a year ago has a 9 wire interface. It does not need a connection to a receiver to operate. Out of curiosity, I checked the manual for the Nomad I (copyrighted 2005) on Motosat's web site, and it also has a 9 wire interface, and does not appear to require a serial connection to a receiver.
Long story short, the reasoning behind my previous comment was flawed, as I was thinking that my original 8 wire controller was a Nomad, which it apparently is not.
I therefore have no reason to call into question the statement that the Nomad will work with any receiver.

Sorry Al.

Thanks Al. And to clarify, the Motosat tech told me that any Nomad controller will work. My Motosat CONTROLLER won't run the dish reciever. Might have to break down and buy a new Nomad controller unless I find one used somewhere.

If you don't need a reciever with the Nomad, how do you work that out with Dish/Direct? I know hardly anything about satellite stuff. Thanks

Yes, what you have is a Motosat Executive controller. You need to upgrade to a Motosat Nomad controller (it does not matter which one). BTW, one thing Motosat did that I do not understand. The Executive was wired so if you turned on the ignition it would stow the dish, automatically. The Nomad requires you to manually stow. I can not figure that out.

Larry,

You do need a receiver to watch TV, but the Nomad will happily point the dish at the proper place in the sky without a receiver attached. There isn't much point in doing this, other than during the installation of the system. You can get the dish and the controller setup, before you start mucking with the receiver.
Another benefit is that you can get your dish locked on the satellites before you power on your receiver. This way, the receiver will begin gathering program and schedule information as it powers up.
