Residential refridgerator issue

Yahoo Message Number: 70776
Good morning everyone,

I have come across an issue with the Amana and Jen-air refers that I thought I would share.
It appears that there was a defect in design on some of these that pertains to one of the freon lines to the compressor. This line is routed down into the drain pan area at the bottom of the unit. The line is cushioned with foam tape and sits down in the pan. This cushion acts like a sponge and draws moisture from the drain pan and is causing corrosion on this copper line. The line will corrode and small hole breach the line. This will allow the compressor to draw water into the system and destroy the compressor. This will require replacement of the entire refrigerator as you can guess can be quite expensive.
There is an inspection and fix that can be done prior to a failure of the line. The refer will need to be removed and the line inspected for corrosion. If corrosion is found the line will need to be cleaned and treated with a baking soda paste to neutralize the acid that is forming on the line. The line will then need to be rerouted to keep it out of the water tray.
If you find that the line is corroded to a point of possible failure I would recommend contacting a refrigerator repair person. They should be able to replace this section of copper line and recharge the system at a fraction of the cost of a new unit.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me.
Happy Travels

John,

Do you have the model number for the Amana units involved?

Bob as far as we can tell so far it is all Amana, Jenair and Maytag resisedential style refers from 05 forward. These are all manufactured by Maytag and we are seeing the issue in CC Monaco and Beaver so far.

Thank You John (JD) Davis
