Power loss 05 Allure 470 ISL 400

Completed a trip to Eugene OR this past Thursday. New steer tires, alignment check, paintwork, lube oil filters(air, oil, fuel-2, and last but not least a radiator replacement.

As I started up the hills of Central Oregon I found that the engine had lose half of its power.
Max reading on torque 700+=. Horsepower reading 230. It felt as though fuel was not getting to the engine We limped home to Boise ID area. Any ideas about what is going on?

Have you lost boost pressure? With the radiator replacement a hose may be loose on the air intake and boost system.

If Silveleaf is not tossing you out a code, and all else seems OK guage wise, I would start with fuel filters. Make sure they are not clogging up with a perhaps a bad batch of fuel?
I've not yet ever replaced my air filter, any connections from this and the ECU brain to control the turbo? Could it have been un-plugged? (That is only a question, as of me not knowing about how the air intake works with the turbo). How about the turbo boost, what was it reading at this half power?

Sounds exactly like my symptoms when I had bad fuel which clogged fuel filters. I would change the filters before doing anything else. That is cheap and easy and may solve the problem.

It could be fuel filters as well. I figure since the CAC was out and it was okay prior, I would look for a leak first. Clamp loose, hose not all the way on etc.

If 14 was not max boost what was max?

I go with Mikee. With the radiator work you have a loose hose or clamp and loosing boost. Check it all very very close. Can be hard to see or maybe obvious, 14 is simple not enough. Have had problems on my DD330 with loosing boost to always find a ruptured boot. A hard pulling engine should have more boost at lower rpm. Look for the simple first.

The low boost can be either a cause or an effect. Low fuel flow will also result in low boost. I would still try the cheapest and simplest first. Fuel filters.

Hi,

This is sort of a chicken and egg conversation when it comes to boost vs power. Low boost will not let the engine create power. No fuel will keep the boost from coming on because the exhaust does not expand due to low combustion and does not expand the exhaust gasses enough to spin the turbo. It could be either. My thinking was it was okay prior to the radiator being changed, the CAC is with the radiator. The only time you can get to max boost is when the engine is pulling and making power. More fuel equals more boost. No boost and the computer will not let the fuel in.

The power problem is resolved . Tech at Cummins Intermountain in Boise drove my coach up a long grade. Back at the shop he crawled under and found that the "boot" connection from the turbocharger had come undone from the charge air cooler. He was able to slip the boot back in place and tightened the clamp. Another trip up the grade and all was back to normal.

I had that same boot blow off a few hundred miles after a radiator change at Colton Truck. I was able to get the boot back on and tighten the clamp, however the boot blew off again. The problem in my case was that after the radiator change (for what ever reason) the factory boot was a little to short and it was difficult to get the boot clamp completely over the lip. After a tow to a truck repair in Flagstaff, Az., they installed a slightly longer boot.
