3M protective coating

I have the 3M protective film on the front of my 2001 Intrigue. It has developed extensive blotchy dark spotted areas. It will not scrub off, so I assume it must be between the 3 M film and the clear coat. The coating is solid, tightly bonded with no cracking. There is no apparent reason how anything could have gotten under the film to discolor it. Have any of you experienced the same? Any suggestions what can be done? Does 3 M stand behind their product?

Thanksd for any advice you may have.

Sounds like you could have some mold? Above is one of many strings on 3M Masks, this one from RV.Net. If it is mold, don't know what you can do to get it out... I do find that 3M has a very good tech support. So you also might call and ask for input from them too.
Our 3M mask is on it's last leg. Abused before we bought it, suspect by someone that used a buffer on it. The outside layer is shot. I can get it to look a bit better, buy plastic compound, straight up and down, then adding a paste wax over it. Will look better, but does not last. We'll remove after we take a trip to Alaska, and then detail the coaches areas that need touch up paint, all at the same time. I have not decided what we will do after this, maybe just run the coach with nothing on the front at all...

3M has a bad reputation on warranty support for the protective film. They will honor the warranty, but be prepared to apply a lot of work, time, and persistance to get them to pay.
Sounds like the film will have to be replaced. You could lose some paint in the process, but the warranty covers the cost of repainting too with the above proviso.

The film has been improved since your film was manufactured.

We just removed ours. It was disgusting! We had an RV Tech in Oklahoma City help us. Over 8 hours labor and sore fingers later, it's off. Use a heat gun, a plastic scraper and lots of muscles for hours. Better to tackle it when the outside temperature is fairly warm. We had quotes from RV body shops of $800-$1000 just to remove it, plus they don't guarantee that you won't need to repaint after they remove it. 3M only has a short warranty and guess when the problem happens?? Right after the warranty runs out. Don't wait too long to remove it. The longer you wait, the more difficult it is to remove. We only have one spot where the paint was scraped and we'll have to have that touched up. We would never have 3M put back on our Allure. Good luck! Lonny & Diane
