Oil Drain Plug

Does anybody off hand know the correct size of the Oil Drain Plug for the Cummins Motor 6CTA, 8.3 lr, 300 HP motor? I'm interested in replacing the Drain Plug with a Fram Quick Drain type connector or similar? Any help with this would be appreciated?

I trust that by now you have received your answer BUT......... Your Cummin serial # presented to the dealer should retrieve the information. I would also help if you get the Part # of the oil pan.
Cummins sells the special valve/drain plug made of brass for ease of draining. It includes a hose to guide the oil into a container.
I have reciently installed one for convienience

Hi Folks-

Just tried to have our yearly service done at J Care Service Center- (Indianapolis, IN) Could not get the oil plug out to drain oil- They asked who did it last-I said let me get the Work Order out of the coach-

J Care Service Center in Hebron, IN.- they looked at the work order and found they Torque it to 65#- should be 35#- said it was soft metal

and strip it trying to get out- would need to weld something on it to get it out- They had no welder or replacement plug- They suggest I call

to Hebron, IN. on Monday and talk to Justin the Service Manager- They were sure FlyJ would take care of at some location of my choice down the road- They were very Supportive- I wish they did not have to weld on the coach- I know if they do there's a label in battery area of what
to do-

They said the plug was too soft for easy out-

I'm not much of a tool man-

Question- any body have idea how to get out without welding? Thanks for any advice

If it were me, I would get the biggest pair of vice grips I could find and clamp them on the bolt as tight as possible, then try to loosen it. I might even use a rubber mallet on the vice grips to break it loose. I would do this when the engine is cold. But, that's just me. Good luck.

I would go to a Cummins truck center. Seems like a good 6 point socket with an impact wrench should free the plug if its not cross-threaded.

Hello Stan;

Sorry to hear of your difficulty in getting the drain plug out. When I did my first oil change, I had one heck of a time getting the drain plug out, especially because of the skid plate and restricted access to the plug. I eventually had to use two wrenches; a large properly sized allen wrench to fit the hole in the plug and another wrench to hold the outside of the drain assembly. You MUST be sure to hold the drain assembly so that the torque used to remove the drain plug does not transfer to the oil pan. The oil pan is fiberglass and will crack if you apply too much stress to it while removing the drain plug... and replacing the oil pan is a very long and expensive process.

Stan,

If your Intrigue is set up like mine it has a 3 way hydraulic fitting coming out of the oil pan. One end is attached to the oil pan, one end is attached to the oil fill tank at the back of the coach and the other outlet has a recessed plug in it with what used to be an allen screw head.

If yours is set up like mine, I don't see why they could not drop the hose end of the fitting and drain the oil from there. Then after the oil is drained, remove the fitting and work on it away from the coach.
My coach has a composite pan and I don't know what kind of heat it would take.

I had a similar experience recently. My oil plug was distorted because someone used the wrong size allen wrench. Once we got it out, I went to a hydraulic shop here in memphis and bought the same plug(and a couple of extras) except with a Hex head on it. I do not remember the part number. CC has a manufacturer part number they can give you for the part. When you call the hydraulic shop, just tell them you want the same part with a hex head.
