URGENT - Heater pump leaking

The heater pump on our coach is leaking big time. Can anyone tell me how they bypassed the pump? I am thinking of just connecting the input to the output of the pump. Seems easier than removing the hoses from the engine block.

Yes, go ahead by all means. Nothing wrong with that temp fix at all. Disable the fuse or just cut one of the wires to it.

Ok, we'll see how my patch job works tomorrow. Have to get coolant first thing and then off we go over Snoqualmie Pass for Seattle. I ran the engine for about 10 minutes at 1000rpm and got the temp to 130 and no leak. Pulled the pump while I was down there on my head in the hole in the bedroom. Now to find a new pump.

Make sure you used metal or copper to splice the hose together and not any plastic. Plastic will get hot, soften and start linking. Short copper with clamps is a good bypass. Understand Guaranty in Junction City Oregon stocks the pumps. The seals are replaceable in the pump, but can be not the easiest to change. Have rebuilt several.

A place in Seattle is a dealer for the pumps and have gotten seal kits from them. They have to order the parts in.

Al, the pump is the same as you had for sale - MP801-001 P/N: 28985.
Dallas, we spend the summer at Blue Sky RV Park off of exit 22 in Preston. We didn't find out about the problem until I started the coach this morning to leave and got a check engine light and a blinking stop engine light with a low coolant warning. Looked in the expansion tank and it was practically empty. It was full when I left Boise on Saturday morning. I spent today getting parts and bypassing the pump. I had 1/3 gallon of Fleetguard ES Compleat that is in our cooling system. I'm going to stop at Cummins in the morning to see if I can get more coolant so I have some to top off if needed.
Leonard, thanks for the link. That looks like the pump. I'm going to call MP Pumps tomorrow and see if they have a dealer in Seattle. Funny but A Parts Warehouse is in my old home town of Lake Orion, MI. To make the temp fix I got heater hose parts from NAPA. I only have to go 140 miles so I'll take it slow to keep the temps down.

Sounds like you got a good handle on your leak. I don't want to throw gas on the fire BUT just for grins take a look at the other notorious like pump that leaks. This located behind the front bumper passenger side. Based on all the posts and if that be an original I would do both. As you are probably aware they run with the key in the on position always. I have the NAPA part numbers for the hoses if yours are unreadable.

I had the same issue last year. The tech crawled in on top of the engine and installed a new hose from

the block to the pipe going up front. Went to Cummins in Gillette, Wyo. to have the new ES complete

installed. I was told by Chris Snyder and other techs you really don't need the rear pump and that the

front pump will probably last twice as long as it is in a cool location, where the rear pumps failure is

usually due to the sustained heat of the engine compartment. Don't count on repairing your radiator as

a fix as the the fan sucking on the radiator causes it to flex and fail.
The service Manager at CCC told

me a repair will usually fail within two years. I replaced mine 4 weeks ago with a copper and brass unit.

The coach was filled with Es complete OAT ( organic acid ) Its supposed to last and additional 1000

hours and Cummins recommends testing each year after 5 years to insure protection for the engine. Its
pink or light red in color

Has anyone out there had to replace coolant hoses to and from the engine, etc. If so after how many

rears and what is the age of your coach.

I just bought a splicing kit for about $6.00 at Kragen Auto Parts and coupled the two lines together about 3 years ago. It has worked fine since.

The dash heater is not greatly effective but we do not care.

The rear pump had been replaced twice. The front pump never.

I have not found a pump seal rebuild kit for the school bus pump.

Thanks for everyone's advice. My jury rig held and we made it to our final destination in Seattle. It took 5 gallons of coolant to refill the system and it still needs more. I'll top it off when I have replaced the pump. I've heard the suggestions about making the jury rig permanent but we need the heat in some of the places we go. I was not impressed with the mounting technique for the pump using regular 1/4" bolts with nylon stop nuts. I thought I was rehearsing for the Cirque de Soleil standing on my head on the engine valve cover to hold a wrench on the stop nuts.

Next step, new pump.

I had the same surprise when looking at the pump mounting. Mounted in a way to expose the seal to all the crap from the engine fan blowing whatever towards it and second the heat from the engine compartment against it.
I remount the pump seal down and then had a stainless steel dam plate bent to sort of give this pump a little more chance of survival from dust storms. As of this day all is well with no further replacements.
There is some merit to the eliminating that pump as there is enough pull to keep the coolant moving in the system. Maybe the adding of that engine compartment pump was an after thought for the heating system. The issue of just not circulating the coolant for months in the summer would led to customer complaints when 6 months later the drivers heater was plugged.
Another fix is carry a spare.

I called MP Pumps today and said I had a motorcoach with one of their pumps in it. Debbie said, "You have a Country Coach. Where are you located?" I told her I was in Seattle and she said "Call Cascade Machinery and ask for a 29924. They usually have one on the shelf". I thanked her and called Cascade Machinery who said they normally stock them but have had a run on them so they will have one for me in 10 days. Jury rig will have to survive until we take the grandson to Oregon the week of the 4th. I may rebuild the old pump for a spare.

If you're passing nearby Junction City, OR, check with Guaranty RV parts department (541-998-2333). They've stocked the pumps in the past. They may be a bit pricey - I paid them $255 (including shipping) for one in Nov. 2008. You may be able to find a cheaper source.
