Duo-Therm AC

Hi, gang. We are currently in Sedona, AZ, and it is hot. Today I was running just the back AC and it was not keeping up. I turned off the electric hot water, since we are connected to 30 amps, and turned on the front. It ran for about 10 minutes, and shut off. Now nothing works, not even the fans, on either unit. Circuit breakers are fine. Any ideas? BTW, the controller is acting flakey (although it has been doing that for several weeks now). It is had to get it to respond to commands. I press both fan and mode at the same tine to change units and it changes the setting on the unit I am on. I have to keep fooling with it to get it set. Since neither unit will respond or do anything now, I suspect the controller, but I am hoping someone can tell me how to prove or disprove that. And if I need a new controller, who would carry it?

I will take a real wild a........, er, shot at this. In the past people have had good luck opening up the AC cover, and plugging/unplugging the control wire. Do the same with the wire going into the thermostat. That will clean up the contacts, might help. Cheap and easy, in any case.

I read where someone diassembled the thermostat and cleaned the button contacts and all was well.

There's a guy in CO that will send you a reconditioned 4 button for 95.00 if that's the way you have to go, they're hard to find. I just replaced mine and he's good to deal with. Here's his current deal on e-bay:

Yes, I have taken the switches apart and cleaned them. However, do it only if you are competent with small mech item disassemble and reassembly.

Al That is what happens when the contacts get dirty. They can be cleaned, but the parts are small and there is a tiny spring that you don't want to lose. It's my understanding that a new controller requires you to replace the control board in the A/C unit also. Contact me privately if you want more info.

I have had similar problem. Although on 30Amp service, I question that your are going to get both AC's running at same time. Take a look at posts 30478 & 30505 and the discussion within that group. It may provide some ideas. The Duo-Therm thermostat have contacts that can be cleaned. Be careful, they will break and you can lose parts.
