Oily Toad

Yahoo Message Number: 5298
After a days driving a film of oil or diesel appears on the rear of our 95 Intrigue and the toad. After two or three days it's pretty messy. Oil burn seems reasonable at a quart per 1000 miles or so and total mileage is only 35000. The oil breather tube extends about 2" below the engine block and a fair amount of oil collects behind it on the mud flap. Any ideas or suggestions?

Your is the first pre-ISC engine that I have heard about having this problem. My 2000 had it in spades.

First they replaced the breather assembly (twice). Then drilled a bigger hole in the PacBrake (after back off the pressure and almost eliminating its effectiveness), and finally resolved the issue by installing a new blow-by tube external to the block (it is my understanding that the previous 8.3's had an external tube and the ISC's changed to an internal design). Some new valve cover bolts were in order too (they went to a design on th elater issues where the top diameter of the bolt was stepped down and they broke -- ahhh progress).

My suspicion is that the breather is plugged. Cummins in Coburg. Ore, replaced mine when the issue first surfaced. Cleaning it out may be possible. I'd call them and give them a try.

Thanks Chuck, Based on your suggestions I noted some possible signs of high crankcase pressure (leaky pully seal and oil pan gasket).
Will make a visit to Cummins.
