Dometic NDR1492 Refer Lost Its Juice

I know that there has been discussions before on replacing the Dometic NDR1492 double-door refrigerator (60H x 37 1/2W / 26 11/16D). The cooling system has an ammonia leak. Decided that putting a new cooling unit in a 11-12 year old fridge is probably not the best choice since the mother board is also old. Every new Dometic or Norcold side-by-sides are now about 4 inches taller, which would put it into our ceiling or the drawers below. Also the new ones are narrower by about 4 inches. And to go with a 2-door with freezer on top is even worse (small). So that means a lot of woodwork to put a new fridge in. Not sure that we want to go with a household electric fridge. Got any suggestions??

We went through the same thought process with our Dometic NDR 1292 and came to the conclusion to install a new Amish cooling unit that comes with a 5 year warranty. The cooling unit is basically THE refrigerator. This seemed a whole lot better to us than to have to remove a window and manhandle the refrigerators in and out of the coach. Plus as you mentioned, they don't make an absorption type refrigerator that will fit in our fridge space (don't know about residential), so there would be some costly carpentry work involved. . Since we did our own work, we saved a bunch of money. If you later need a control board, you can get an aftermarket one from "Dinosaur" (sp?) for $100-$200. Good luck in your decision.

Here are the dimensions of the residential that most of the norcold 1200LRIM refrigerators will swap with. You will note that the samsung 17.9 cu ft refrigerator will fit flush and have a few inches to spare on the side (extra cooling but you don't need it since is hardly puts out any heat at all). As you mentioned, you will need to remove the drawars to gain another 5 or 6 inches in the height. We had Davis Cabinets in Junction city do it for us for less than $300 and then put the draws back in but just made them shallower.
I took tide window out of the drivers side because it is a big window and put it back with the help of one other person. Took about 10 minutes to remove and 15 mintues to reinstall with another foam seal around the rim. Easier and no expense versus removing a front windshield...assuming you have a side window you can use to change out the refrigerator.
Electrical consumption off the inverter is not and issue either. 10 amps and hour will easily take (2) 8 D batteries through the night and into the next day (~18 hours with normal electrical usage and microwave). I get almost 2 days because I have (4) 8D batteries.

Measure your door. Our counter depth Samsung fit through the door of our 2006 Intrigue. No window removal. We had all of the work on our conversion done at Oregon Motorcoach Center. They did a great job and we enjoyed having more than adequate refrigerator space through our 2 month winter trip.

I have heard a bit about the Amish cooling system. Does this make the refrigerator only operate on propane and not AC? Our coach does not have a real big propane tank on it.
