Jan,

We've spent 3 winters in the bus. There are lots of factors to consider with a winter stay. Part I of a two part article is here: http://www.muniac.com/Winter_P1.html Perhaps you will find it informative and helpful. Winterizing usually implies taking the bus off line and preparing it for winter storage. I don't think that it what you are inquiring about. In our situation we experienced temperatures of -20F. These lasted only a couple of days. Often temps wouldn't go above 5F during the day. Negative numbers at night. We made it through the winters but not without some problems. Good luck and treat winter stays with respect. Avoid them if possible.

Jan,

We were next to you in Harrisburg. We visited Charleston this winter, but did so in the Jeep. We stayed at a very nice RV park just a little south of Savannah, GA and did a day trip to Charleston. Beautiful city and wonderful to explore.

Thanks, Sharon, for the information regarding Charleston and an RV park near Savannah. Would you mind posting the name of the RV park? We'd love to visit that area too. Thanks again.

It was KOA-Savannah South in Richmond Hill. There were trees and the sites, while not paved or grassy were level. The office was very cooperative in arranging tours, etc. We stayed there for 3 or 4 days. This park was easy on/off for the freeway.

Jan,

I think your decision is a wise one. One aspect of winter is the trapping effect. You end up in a winter destination, get setup early and then the snow hits. Once that cycle starts it isn't easy (or safe) to do an exodus to warmer climates should something go bad. Getting help quickly in bad weather isn't always an option either. You buy the whole ranch so to speak then get a feeling of being marooned. We don't run our bus on salty roads either. Drive it in snow is out of the question!! I think salt can inflict serious damage on busses. We enjoy skiing so the winter issues come along with the package. We get in before snow and salt hit, ride out winter then leave after it's all cleaned up.
Not been to Charleston, SC. I'm sure you're keeping an eye on Irene should your traveling window overlap with storm movements. It seems it's path is more north which means Florida is off the hook. I'm glad you found the information helpful. Help is what makes (and keeps) a community healthy. Good luck and safe travels.
