Norcold 1210 Replacement

Yahoo Message Number: 74076
The Norcold has failed AGAIN and we've orderd a Samsung. What have folks who have made this change done to secure the fridge and it's contents while traveling.
The doors should be easily contained with a simple velcro strap. I've seen a similar GE unit in a Tiffin that had J latches installed on the freezer drawer. How do you keep the things on the refer shelves in place?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

You sound like you need a Samsung intervention. Make sure you ordered the right model number. I included a picuture of the model placecard inside the refrigerator door of my Samsung in the photo album on this site.
I have uploaded a series of pictures to the photo section of this site showing my installation and answering your question on how I made and installed shelve brackets, and velcro straps for holding the doors while traveling. Very simple stuff to do...(well that is all relative). I also showed how I anchored the refrigerator by 2 drywall screws (really simple)

The only cabinet modification you need to make is to make it exactly 70 inches high. I made mine 69.75 inches and it had to be really forced in to the cabinet but it probably will not come out easy. The refrigerator puts off less than a couple degrees of heat so closed off the rear and top vent completely with foam board with a thin plywood board as backing. You will not need to vent this Samsung refrigerator. The compressors run most of the time but put off so little heat and consume about 12 amps per hour off the inverter measured from 12 volts. So basically about 1 amp per hour at 120 volts.
I have a total of about and inch of excess width for the cabinet opening after the samsung is installed but that is enough air because the inside of the cabinet is wider because the existing molding that held the Norcold in for a tight seal is wider than the width of the Samsung. Therefore you do not need to widend the cabinet. The evaporation coils are on the bottom of the Samsung so that is where the heat disapates and there is enough room for circulation without the existing outside vents needed.
I know some people have used cables and straps to hold their refrigerators in the cabinet but if you make the cabinet 70 inches tall then you can hold it in with screws or brackets against the two front coaster wheels under the refrigerator. You could also make a braket on the top of the refrigerator but I dont think that is necessary.
I also rearanged the existing wiring in the cabinet to the back corner so as to not to interfer with the residential samsung backing up against them. The Samsung takes up the entire depth of the cabinet. I disconected the gas pipeing down to underneath the coach and made a quick disconnect above the cargo door for connecting my barbeque to it if I use it on the left side of the coach.
I used the green and red wire (12 volts) that used to run the norcold and dropped them down to the plumbing bay and used that curcuit to power my new masserator pump. I dropped the 120 volt plugin for the norcold ice maker/refrigerator curcuit down and back behind the two shorten drawers that I cut down to drop the floor for the 70 inch cabinet. If you take out the drawers you can drop the 120 volt plug from the samsung through a hole and connect to the 120 receptical below the new cabinet floor and behind the drawers. This way it is out of the way of getting the Samsung refrigerator to fit flush in the cabinet and easy to get to if you need to unplug it. The Drawers are not that deep and there is plenty enough room and wire length to put the 120 volt receptical behind the drawers that are removable and accessible.
Then you need to go back to the curcuit breaker panel and move both the black wire and the nuetral wire over to the invert side of the panel so that you can use the samsung off the inverter and the grid. CC installed the norcold to only use grid power when on AC but the samsung will work off the inverter (modified or pure sine wave). It is very important that you also move the white neutral wire over to the inverter side of the panel or you will have no neutral and therefore no 120 volts to the old Norcold receptical under the refrigerator. I have seen many try to move the black (hot wire) over and not the white wire and then have a dead wire when not on the grid. Then they write about it on this site.

Any other questions, drop me an email.

Jim,

I don't know what model Samsung you ordered, but the one we have is easy to secure. We make sure bottles, etc are in the door storage areas. Heavier items ride well on the shelves. We use a dishtowel to tie the door handles together and put the foot stool for the eurochair between the freezer drawer and the opposite wall with the slides in. Works well for us and we traveled from Oregon to Florida and back this winter using this method.
