Rain leak in LR slide

Yahoo Message Number: 74160
I've been restling with this leak for years. It leaks through the forward cupboard right behind the driver's seat. I've resealed the outer roof edge of the slide but it still leaks. I think it's OK with the slide in? Anyone have a similar problem with suggestions? TIA

Your Leak may be too high up for our example. But we fought for years with our leak in the rear of the living room slide and this included the factory resealing all four slides just before they shut down. Several techs took a shot and finally the guys at OMC resealed the windows and we finally have a dry coach. Note we have a 2006 and the windows needed to be resealed.

Hi, Larry

My problem leak was in the BR slide. Mine started years ago much like yours. When water started dripping sown the inside wall I went to a shop that removed the molding on the top edge of the slide, allowed the interior of the wall to dry out, removed all of the old sealant from the slide and the molding and resealed the molding back in place.
I have had no leaks on the BR slide. They inspected the molding on the LR slide and said it was ok. I'm holding my breath on that one!

Thanks guys! Dick, when you say "...removed the molding on the top edge of the slide," I assume you're talking about inside the coach? I don't see any "molding" where my leak is from inside. Just the ceiling panel where it meets the wall inside the cupboard, right where the leak is. It doesn't leak with the slide in, so I'm thinking it's got to be on the roof of the slide? Even though I sealed the slide outer roof edge, it still leaks. Guess I need to do a better job of sealing. When it finally stops raining from Tropical Storm Lee, I'll put the slide out and take another go at it. Thanks again.

Larry,

The molding is on the oudoors side, exposed to the weather.
This is a common problem that has been discussed recently. You may want to check the archives for additional comments.
But, basically the solution could be:
1. Inspect the edge of the of the slide out where the outer skin joins the slide-out roof skin. Is the seal in good shape? No gaps or fissures? Good adhesion to the f/glass? Was high quality polyurethane adhesive/sealant used? If ist is suspect, clean off and re-seal with a fat radiused bead of polyurethane.
2. Inspect the 3/4" Metal "L" molding/trim piece that covers the joint between the slide-out sidewall and the slide-out roof skin. These moldings were simply attached with an adhesive/sealant at the factory. They may have loosened over time. If it is loose it will allow a small trickle to enter and seep into your cabinet area as a result of capillary action. If it is loose, remove it clean the surfaces. The, rought up and re-attach with poluretane adhesive and flush fasteners like countersunk screws or pop rivets. You may want to do this to all four of these as a preventative measure.

I would encourage you to attend to this as soon as you can. This seepage can cause lotsa problems.

Thanks Daron. This is great information! I took your advise and checked the archives and noted that one successful repair was the result of using Eternabond tape. I just happen to have a roll of black colored Eternabond in the bay and I think I'll give it a try tomorrow. The awning can be moved out of the way fairly easy. Hope it works. Thanks again.

Larry,

I have had no personal experience with Eternabond but, I have read that it is an excellent sealing material. It may work fine.
However, IMHO if your f/glass skin has parted at the joints, I am thinking that you need the adhesion, cohesion and tensile strength that the polyurethane adhesive/sealants will provide to help "glue" these parts together in addition to simply providing a flexible seal.
I have used Sikaflex and 3M 5200 polyurethane with good success. Sikaflex polymerizes (cures) faster and costs a little less. It is available in black or white at marine supply sources at about $13 per caulking gun size tube. Some say 3M is better but, both worked for me.

Good luck with your project.

Thanks Daron. I didn't really see any separation of the f/glass. I did see a gap at the top corners (FWD/AFT) and I filled it in with silicone. I then ran the Eternabond along the edge where the outer wall meets the slide roof. I have my fingers crossed. Thanks for the info on the Sikafex and 3M.
