Lets Talk Alternators

97' Magna with International (DD) engine and Leece-Neville alternator, model A0012824JB-superceded by A0012824LC.
Problem: alternator not working when we purchased the coach. $141 rebuild and stopped working again. Replaced regulator, brushes and bearings at rebuild, 5000 or so miles ago.
Not real sure I want to invest in this one again. Thinking of updating the Alternator. Our coach has the DUVAC system plus takes tach. reading off the Alt. Suspect heat being a big cause of early failure as Alt. is located on exhaust/turbo side and air flow is not the same as on a truck. Looking at this unit:

Not really sure as my experience with Delco/Remy alternators has not been the most positive. Does anyone have history or track record of these Delco units? They will run cooler is the big plus I'm looking at.
Others have replaced there Alternator, what did you use as a replacement and how has it stood up? Note the warranty on RV's is only one year. Says something about RV demands. Coach batteries are keep charged daily with gen and solar, so they are not that far down when we hit the road after camping.
When one replaces/updates what is the advantage to going bigger on alt? Present is 160 amps, but if one goes with a 200 amp will the extra capacity bring batteries up quicker and have less work load then the 160 amp?

Mikee, hope you can help on this one.

Thanks
Leonard

I have rebuilt my alternator myself and about everything in it was burnt up. When I pulled mine out it already had a rebuild sticker on it. What I suspect is happening is when you start your engine with the house and chassis batteries needing charged it overloads the alternator for an extended period of time and burns it up. Even if your house batteries and chassis batts need only a small surface charge that can add up to a lot of amps depending on you configuration. I don't really like the boost switch coming on when the engine is running in every situation. I would like to set mine up to where I could limit the amount of ampherage that would be allowed to go to the house batteries. I'm sure this would help the lifespan of my alternator.

Leonard,

Look in files for "Alternator Package Allure 1997.pdf". It explains the hassle I went through on my coach.

Very interesting Jack. This coach does have the isolator so I can dodge that problem. How has the new Alt. stood up compared to the old?

I replaced my Leece-Neville 160A alternator with a rebuilt of the same specs from a local shop in 2007 about 28,000 miles ago. Still working fine. Since we drycamp only about 10 nights a year there should be few low batteries to charge at the start of the engine.

Leonard,

Hopefully, you have the original part number. A lot of the alternators available are "will fit" units, based on mounting and output.
If you have the original part number check with Leece Neville and get a Cross reference. I havbe had good luck with LN alternators.
When you talk to them be sure you tell them the tack gets its info from the alternator.

Friend working at Cat some Engines came with Delco Alternators. Our older Cat engines used Magnetic Pickups on the Flywheel housing to sense the Flywheel teeth to Power the Tack Newer Cat engines use similar sensors for the ECU. Not having Leese Niville Exp. The Tack is the other issue. I have a Place in Orlando Florida called South East Power that rebuilds them and sells new ones also. Google them and run buy your Issue. The are a great Shop and a few months ago they Repaird our Freedom Inverter! Theay do lots of Custom Diesel work. My Two cents and Keep us posted. Ken 99 Allure 30356
