Lets Talk Alternators - Revisited

Removed the old Leece-Nevelle, placed on test bench and it works great. Re-intstall, test coach wiring, no issues. Start and the alt. works as it should. See over 15 volts at isolator terminals for short time then settles to 14.2 to 14.5 as batteries respond to charging. This is after it had totally stopped charging.
Stuck brushes is my guess. The manuel says that is one thing to check for when not charging. Bumping it around while taking it off, unstuck the brushes. Bummer. Wish it had stayed not working so I could have had good excuse to update it. Guess I will watch it and if it stops again, tap the top of the regulator/brush holder assembly. If it happens again and can prove stuck brushes, then may be time to update to never unit. I guess it's, if it isn't broke don't fix it.
One thing discovered. Bosch, Delco Remy and one other brand all have newer designed units that have more open frame design with two internal fans. Some even talk of the new diesel emission control burn off system and the increase load it places on the Alt. and the need for the Alt. to handle bigger loads, longer. Hence the need for the new designs. Seems Leece-Nevelle is the only one sticking to the old closed in design with only one external fan.

The emission thing may be why some of the newer diesel pickups now have two Alternators.
