Canadian Importation

Yahoo Message Number: 75004
A Canadian friend would really like to buy my coach, but he has checked with the Canadian government which has told him that only 2009 and later coaches are importable into Canada. Now, I know that 2009 was the first year that Country Coach as a corporation could import coaches into Canada, but I also know that many prior-to-2009 Country Coaches have been imported into Canada. My memory tells me that certain modifications have to be made to make them importable. So, my obvious questions are, does anyone know exactly what has to be done, do you know a very ballpark cost to accomplish this, and do you know what the procedure is as far as interfacing with the Canadian government?
I've asked this same question of Damon Rapozo and Chris Snyder, so maybe they'll get back to me as well.

Thanks,

Brian Davis

According to this Canadian government web site your Canadian friend is wrong. The following categories of Country Coach built motor homes are allowed into Canada:

COUNTRY COACH LLC

2004 and newer Allure models (see note 1)

2004 and newer Affinity models (see note 1)

2004 and newer Inspire models (see note 1)

2004 and newer Intrigue models (see note 1)

2004 and newer Magna models (see note 1)

2004 and newer models built on Prevost Chassis (see note 1)

2007 and newer Tribute models (see note 1)

RIV Canada (Registrar of Imported Vehicles), which is an entity set up to manage vehicle imports into Canada has a list of allowed vehicles.

Find it here: http://www.riv.ca/vehicleadmissibility.aspx

You can also see other aspects of the importation process there.
Recall clearance letter may be an issue but I think there is a way around that now - it has been discussed on this forum previously.

Here is the doc of all allowed vehicles from the US: http://www.tc.gc.ca/media/documents/roadsafety/vafus.pdf
See page 19 of section 5. The list posted previously was correct, with Note 1, which says "Note 1: All models equipped with Kustom Fit 6 way power seats are inadmissible."

Admissible is:

2004 and newer Allure models (see note 1) 2004 and newer Affinity models (see note 1) 2004 and newer Inspire models (see note 1) 2004 and newer Intrigue models (see note 1) 2004 and newer Magna models (see note 1) 2004 and newer models built on Prevost Chassis (see note 1)

Inadmissible is:
All other models

All models equipped with Kustom Fit 6 way power seats are inadmissible.
Note that you likely also need to go through the Recall Clearance procedure which verifies that all recalls etc. have been done. If you go to http://www.riv.ca/RecallClearance.aspx and select Motorhomes - Class A and C and then Country Coach Inc it will give you contact info for Country Coach to contact for 'recall clearance documentation'.

Have your friend start the overall process at http://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx
Note that each provice has different registration and insurance procedures, which must be followed appropriately in the province of residence/registration of the importer. British Columbia for example requires all vehicles transferred from out of province (even within Canada) be inspected before registration, while other provinces do not have this requirement.
