LED for Door Handle?

I find that the light in my lucite door handle has burned out again after only 3 years, and it is not even on that often. Has anyone found an LED replacement for that light?

I recently fixed my door handle light. Go to Radio Shack and buy a super bright white LED. Take the old LED light assembly out of the door handle. Use a soldering iron to remove the old light from the assembly. Make sure the holes are free of solder and then solder in the new LED. Clip the excess leads and you are done. Well, done, except for putting the light assemble and handle back together. My fix is working fine and only cost a couple of hours work and the price of the LED.

Gary, I had assumed that what is in there is incandescent. You mean the original is led? I thought led's should last many years. Mine only lasted 3.

Others here have described the repair/replacement. It does involve some soldering and heat shrink tubing helps too. Failing Radio Shack, you will find a plethora of LED products here: http://www.superbrightleds.com/ to include replacements for some of the interior lighting. On the door handle a step down resistance has been included in the circuit which should be checked. LEDs don't operate at 12 volts and hooking one directly to the battery circuit will end its life quickly. The voltage drop through the resistance is a function of the current draw. Thus it's best to error on the side of a larger LED. I replaced ours with a red LED just for something different.
On the Lucite handle, make sure to seal it at the two points where it enters the mounting castings. This is, perhaps, the biggest pain the in butt. It's important to keep out water and other contaminants that come along the way.
All LEDs aren't created the same. Cheap ones from China often won't last per expectations. We know this from flashlights. Good luck.

I have a bunch of extra led lights with the resistor already installed on the pigtail wires. if you can operate a solder gun needed tom remove the existing led light from the center of nickel size circuit board then drill a small hole throughout the existing circuit board to fit the new led light I have. Solder the two lead wires in the right order to the existing two wires and you will have fixed your problem. Took me 10 minutes to do.
led lights have to be in correct polarity so you just have to make sure you get the positive wire to the right wire on the light.
I can send you one of the led light I have for free. I bought a bunch of them for my tugboat hobby boats and they where 10 cents prewired with the resistor and 6 inches of wire to work off 12 volts.
they are made in china and I have not had one burn out on me yet after a couple years of continuous use.....even they did...spending 10 minutes or less to replace one is no problem.

They are bright and they do an excellent job on the door handle.
