Residential Refrigerator . . . turn off?

Yahoo Message Number: 75344
We are thrilled with our residential refer, but since we're not full timing, we thought we'd turn the frig off when it's parked. We have a bigger but similar model at home, and find that there's no "off" button. What do most of you do? We leave our coach plugged in at home when we're not using it, and it seems wasteful to have the frig in the rv running all the time. I know that there's a "demo" mode you can put it in, but I've read posts online from people who have not been able to get it out of demo mode. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

I have a GE profile which we love. It does not have an on and off button that I know of, however, when you keep pushing the button to turn the temp up it will go off. The frig and freezer go off, but the light in the frig stays on when leaving the doors open. I solved this by just flipping the breaker.

I believe you store where I do at Exclusive RV. I have the same Frigidaire as you. Mine is hooked up to the inverter so if I want it off I turn off the inverter. It stays cold for many hours with the doors closed. I'm also pleased with mine.

To those of you who have residential refrigerators: Do you have a problem with doors opening during travel? If so what is the cure? How about things on the inside shifting so that the fall out when opening the door? What all different brands are being used that fit the Dometic recess?

Thanks in advance

Hi Frank,

Our doors on our Amana side by side refrigerator have never opened in almost 5 years and 50k miles we have owned the coach. As for keeping things in place we have removable tension bars that we put across the front of the shelves. They are available at most RV stores. For example:

Frank, my GE Profile has built in latches that look much the same as those that latch your sliding closet doors. The GE did not come that way of course, but the coach manufacture installed them. I can't imagine them ever coming open, they are that tight. Opening the doors after traveling is another story. W always open any cabinet door very slowly since things tend to shift in route. We learned that lesson the hard way as have many others.

I made easily removable wood dowels that go across each shelf to keep items from rolling off the shelf during or after travel. The spring loaded retainers sold by RV stores do not extend far enough to go across the inside width of the Samsung residential Refrigerator.
I also put velcor latches on the doors to keep them from opening on the road although I am not sure the doors would open on their own anyway. Better safe than sorry.

Rather than the rods sold for the fridge get tension curtain rods at WalMart. Lots less expensive and you can get what ever size you need. Handy in lots of places in the rig.

Frank, we have a Samsung with bottom freezer. Our solution is to tie a dishtowel around the handles of the refrigerator doors and put the foot stool to the recliner between the freezer drawer and the edge of the slide. No surprise openings in 10,000+ miles.

Excellent idea Jurhee, I must have been having an off day to not think of that one.

Our Frigidaire residential has opened once while travelling. It was a mess. We now use a small elastic bungee cord between the two (side by side) handles. I tried Velcro strap but the bungee is more convenient to use.
I may get some of those WalMart curtain rods - a few times there have been items against the door so we open it slowly after travelling. We now pack so there's nothing glass/breakable at the front of any shelves, but the curtain rods will let us be more flexible.
Ours has an on/off, but if it didn't I'd either throw the refer breaker from the inverter, or just pull open the face of the compartment under the fridge, and unplug it from the wall outlet.

McGyver hubby devised a brilliant way to keep the doors closed. We have a velcro strip with a plastic loop that keeps the refrigerator doors closed, but we have a french door frig with a lower freezer. For the freezer, he put small (about 1/2 inch) screw-in hooks on the wood on either side of the freezer drawer, and then used some slightly flexible plastic tubing. He looped the ends of the tubing through (sorry, don't know the real name!) metal pieces that allow us to adjust the tension but hold the loops in place. I will post pictures after our trip in a couple of weeks.
