Diesel Additive

We just purchased a 2007 CC with a 400 HP Cummins engine. During our looking/pricing and such, several dealers advised me and showed me a tank where you put in the diesel additive. A couple of the brand new coaches did not require this additive. Now, getting back to my 2007 engine, during the walk through. I posed that question to the dealership. They advised me that as long as I used low-sulfur #2 diesel fuel, I would not need that additive.
My question is ..DO I need to put in that additive, just to be safe and maintain any warranty left on the engine? I will be posting this question on IRV2, for those who subscribe to both.

Starting with the automotive market in 2009 and then with virtually all of the medium and heavy duty diesel vehicles in the 2010 model year, diesel engined vehicles will require an additional fluid to operate. These vehicles will require an "aqueous urea solution,"? called a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). DEF is a urea-based chemical reactant designed specifically for use in SCR systems to reduce NOx emissions. This should be a non-issue for your 2007 engine, though the dealers seem to be talking about it. Odd, though you may have been looking at a 2010 at the time. The comment about #2 ULSD is correct.
Seems to me that your engine should be good to go without any additives, with some provisos to consider.

  • In cold weather, switch to #1 Diesel.
  • If you engine sits for long (months) in cold weather add a diesel fuel stabilizer.
  • If you engine sits for long (months) in hot, humid weather add a biocide to the diesel tank.
  • Some owners are putting in a fuel lubricity additive to reduce the possibility of fuel pump failure ($$$)

Just because you have a 2007 model year coach does not mean you have a 2007 engine. My 2007 CC Inspire was manufactured in August 2006 and has the 2006 CAT C-9 Engine. No additives needed.
