LED CEILING LIGHT REPLACEMENT EXPERIENCE?

Yahoo Message Number: 75580
HI everyone,

Does anyone have experience with replacing the ceiling halogen 12v 10w bulbs with the LED lights offered by "Prudentrver.com"
If you have replaced your halogen bulbs are you satisfied with the LED's ? I am tired of the hot lights melting the plastic covers and am concerned about the fire hazard. I heard someone had a fire.

comments?
Thanks,

I've replaced all 32 of my puck lights with the G4-WHP-15DAC lamps from Superbrightleds.
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&category=MR16&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2FG4-WHP15-DAC.htm
I used the warm white leds and am very satisfied with them. The reflectors need to be removed from the fixtures and the pins on the lamps will need to be bent slightly to fit into the socket. Be careful bending the pins so that they are not bent right at the solder joint where they are attached to the board.
The biggest hurdle I had to get over was the cost. At $16.95 it is tough to choke down that much money for replacement bulbs but I can turn all 32 of my ceiling lights on and only pull about 6.5 amps out of my batteries which is less than the current consumed by the 10 lights that come on in the galley area when I turn on the one switch that controls them. I've comforted myself about the expense by thinking of the much lower current draw on my batteries when boondocking; and of course, the heat is much less.

Hi Rosemary,

We used Marine Beam Lighting (www.marinebeam.com), as the source for our LED lighting. Jeff Field (864.275.7837) helped me get my order straight as to the kind of light, intensity, etc. These guys are very easy to work with and prices were better than most places we tried.

I'll always try these guys first to see if they have what I need.

I have noticed that the RV light bulb replacement LED's have not changed , since they were introduced about 5 years ago. The price of other things like flashlights with LED's have come down a lot and are more powerful. The latest price at Costco for a Superbright LED flashlight, that compare in power( light ) to a regular flashlight, were just over 6$ each and that included , the batteries and a machined aluminum body. At 16.95$ each for just the bulb, is ridiculous. I am not criticizing someones choice, if that is what they choose, but the cost to run the generator, to get the payback , would be years. I have looked at most websites that I can find, but that 16.95$ price is probably the lowest. I will not change to LED , even though, I think it makes great sense, at those astronomical prices. I would hope that as Forum Members , find the lower prices, that they would post them, for the rest to see.

Ron,

I agree the prices seem really unreasonable. I do hope someone has found better prices. I cannot afford to replace all of my lights.I am mostly concerned with those I use most frequently, because of the heat generated. I am having to purchase more of the round bezels to cover the lights. I heard someone had a coach fire started by these lights and I am not surprised.
I will wait and see all the sources people recommend and I will be replacing only those I must at this time. I will be comparing prices and coach owners advice and experience.
Thanks for your input. and everyone else's at this point. I hope more people tell their experiences and have good sources with less expensive lights.

Pete,

Thanks for your reply. How did you remove the reflectors to make room for the disc led's? Did you have to completely remove each fixture and break them off?

Thanks,
Rosemary

Hi back to you. We changed our all halogen lighting to LED at the last CC rally in Oregon several years ago. PrudentRV was the company that supplied the bulbs.

When we lived in a house the electric cook top was halogen. Unlike other electric cook tops that are slow to heat, and never reach a high degree of heat, the heat from the halogen cook top was intense and instantaneous. Imagine our horror when we discovered that our coach lighting used the same system to light the coach that we cooked on for years in our home.

Yes, it was very expensive, but the heat from the halogen bulbs was so intense we could barely use our lights. The lights are not as bright, that is true But now, we don't panic if we forget to turn off a light when we leave the coach. Nor do we refrain from using the lights during the summer. We do need to turn on the furnace in the winter for heat though. We are happier with the LED, even though the light per bulb is not as bright. Turning on every light in the coach uses less watts than one set of halogen lights.

Yes. we would do it all again.

Thanks Bill, I will check them out as well as any and all sources since these things are so pricey.
Did you have to remove the reflectors from the light fixture? If so, how did you do it? I have no clue.

Thanks, Rosemary

Thanks for your reply.

I went on the website but I didn't find the same bulb you are talking about, but several others. Can you tell me which one of the current selections is the same or similar to what you chose? Thanks. Rosemary

Rosemary,

We've used the superbright LEDs in some of our overhead lighting (about six lights in all). They are a round disc design that replaces the 10w two pin halogens. There are a couple of issues for us. 1) The light spectrum is very cold and that may bother some. 2) LEDs have no filament and thus no thermal inertia. This has implications for dimmer circuits only. When lights are dimmed, power is switch on and off rapidly to reduce the average power supplied to the light. Less "average" power causes the light to dim. For incandescent bulbs the filament stays hot during the short time the power has been switched off. This heat smooths out the bursts much the same way the retention in your eye connects the frames of a motion picture. With LEDs light is instantaneous and there is a noticeable high frequency flicker which is annoying after a while. At least as controlled by our dimmer system. I'd gather improvement have been made to LED lighting over the years. Expect those improvements to hit the smallest markets last or not at all. Hope this helps.

Hi Pete

How did you get the reflectors off of the light fixtures. We tried to replace the halogens and could not move the reflector on our ceiling lights. So, I tried to buy new light fixtures that the LED bulbs would work with and, of course, the screw holes would not line up. Figures.
Also has anyone had any luck finding LED bulbs for the halogen fixtures where the bulbs have to be inserted straight up rather than side ways.

You may want to take a look on Ebay at these, 10x Brand New G4 21 led Light Bulbs Lamp Warm White Marine RV Camper Boat DC 12V, I used some of these and have had good service from them.., of course they come from China, but don't the others also? I did find some with the vertical pins but they were too short to reach the connector, have not bothered with them lately. If anyone finds the vertical pins that are long enough to work please let me know..

I din't remove the reflectors, Rosemary, just plugged the lights in. Some of the lights were side mounts, some bottom mounts. Since I wasn't clear as to which light would fit a socket or just how bright I needed, Jeff sent me several to try, which was a big help. I also emailed photos of the sockets and mounts (he is a patient man...).
I agree, these lights aren't cheap but LED's aren't just

Try Marine Beam LED's, Marvin. The pins they have are long enough to fit the fixture and, they make the lights there in South Carolina. Am very pleased with these guys.

Hi Everyone

If you are trying to find LED that fit the G-4 type bulbs that plug straight in you can find them at PrudentRver.com.
They carry both the ones that plug straight in and the ones that lay flat.

Rosmay I have started replacing all of the halogen lights.

Roger We were all looking for an LED light to replace the quartz-halogen . The part you quoted from Amazon is quartz-halogen. However that is a good price for the quartz-halogen bulb

I realize that it was a quartz-halogen, but the previous post referred to a much higher price for the quartz, so I was commenting on that post. Thanks

I stopped at Lowes, yesterday and they were out of the G4 replacement LED bulb which sells for 8.98$. I got a data sheet from them and the LED bulbs are made by ARRAY. It is listed under www.arraylighting.com. We now have to find out where else we can buy this . Typically Lowes and Home Depot would have pretty high mark-ups on this sort of item. If anyone can find where to buy , please advise.

I guess I should have done my homework before my last post. I found on at Amazon .com an LED bulb by Scintiluna ( who only appear to sell on E-Bay and Amazon), a G4 led for 8.99$ that is 31.5 MM round ( 1 1/4 inches ) and it provides 140 Lumens compared to the unit at Lowes which is 67 lumens and it is in Warm White. I can't get to the coach till after the new year, but this appears to be a better fit than the rectangular unit from Lowes. If anyone deides to buy before mid January, I would like to hear back. Hi All - Not intended as thread hijack!!!
I've been watching this thread, trying to determine LED replacement bulb opportunities - and I sure like lower costs if possible:)!
My question is 'which lights' are we talking about, admit I get a big confused (more so recently).

Our 04 Allure has:

-Large ceiling florescent bulbs (Assume no LED for these?) -Wall sconces with two pin bulbs (I think the same bulbs are in the vanity light above the bathroom sink.) -Under cabinet small lights, what I call puck lights, with bright halogen bulbs.
Please confirm, the G4 LED bulbs are the replacement for the 2pin bulbs we have in the sconces and probably vanity light? Or, are these the puck light bulb replacements?
Appreciate any high level summary from those that have been down this road before...

Best to all - may the light be with you!! Smitty

Though I don't have dimmers, has anyone tried the G4 LED replacements on circuits with dimmers? Did you see flickering? At the last FMCA we attended there were LED replacements for the Florescent tubes, but it required the owner to remove the ballast? Any one succeeded in installing the LED tubes? If you have installed LEDs which coor temperature did you use and were happy with the results? TWI 2004 intrigue 11731

Smitty The G4 LED bulb we are referring to are for the puck lights or the almost flush soffitt lights. There are many conversions , to other varieties of these bulbs, but the biggest use is in the bottom side of the cabinets. They had a huge variety of choice onthe Amazon site . Just enter G4 LED bulbs and you will see tha many pages of choices
