TOWABLE PICK-UP

Hi--We tow a'05 Silverado 1500 4WD which fits that description. I don't know if the later years are towable, but you might want to reference the Motorhome magazine Guide to Tow Vechicles.

I have a 2011 Toyota Tacoma with 4 wheel drive and it is not towable unless you install the disconnectable drive shaft. Not a small investment!! Even though it has a transfer case it does not have a neutral. Big mistake from Toyota in my book.

Unless you have one of the vehicles with the steering wheel that doesn't lock when the key is removed or the vehicle in neutral I would recommend you have the pins removed that lock the steering wheel.
That eliminates what is a problem for many...the steering wheel locking and scrubbing the front tires off your toads.
I had this done by a steering column repair shop at a cost as I recall of about $100.

Provides some peace of mind.

We tow a 2011 GMC Sierra 1/2 ton 4x4. In the owners manual there are easy directions on what you have to do to tow it. No fuses to pull, no pumps to install. We just had an M & G braking system installed on it.

We tow a 2000. Chevy 4x4. Push 2buttons kn the dash and the transmission goes into neural. Couldn't. Be easier.

Hi Stan,

I believe most of the current GM 4x4 vehicles with the AutoTrac system are towable. I have been towing a 1999 Chevy Tahoe for 10 years now behingd our coach and it has been very simple to setup. Just a push of a couple of buttons on the dash and the vehicle is free wheeling. I am looking for another vehicle as well and hopefully lighter than the 5300 lb Tahoe. Don't get me wrong, Tahoe has been great towed vehicle. However, I have been wanting to get another pickup for use around home base. I have been looking at the Chevy Colorado. Towable 4x4 and extended cab. Not as comfortable as the Tahoe for travel but it is doable. Especially if you pair up with other couples for going out to dinner and what have you.

Let us know what you decide on.....

Stan, I have a 2011 Silverado, 4x4, just put the transfer case in N and the transmission in Park, and drive away., no problems. So far I have towed it as far as I have driven it.
I was told by the Ford Dealership that none of the F-150's were towable, unless it had a Manual Transfer Shifter., which none did.

Stan, I have been towing an 05 Colorado since I purchased it new. All I had to do was add the necessary towing hardware to the vehicle and I was ready to go. I have the crew cab version with the inline five cylinder engine. Good little truck!
What I particularly like about it was the fact that the steering colume does not lock in the key off position.
You just put the truck in four wheel neutral and the transmission in park, remove the key and away you go.
It is my understanding that in later models steering is locked upon removal of the key.
I have found the Colorado to be durable, dependable and with the cost of ownership low.
I saw where someone mentioned the Ford F-150 and seemed to indicate they thought the truck was non-towable.

I found what they said to be partially true.
Most 4X4 F-150's are built with the shift on the fly electronic selector switches on the dash. The selector does not have a selection for Transfer Case neutral.
That does not mean the tranfer case can not be shifted into neutral. My research into this issue suggests that most F-Series 4X4's come equipped with transfer cases that include a neutral lever on the side of the tranfer case.
My guess is that Ford has made the assumption that most drivers of it's products will never use this function.
There is a kit readily available where a cable very similar to the old choke cables we used to see is attached to this lever and routed into the cab near the bottom of the drivers seat allowing the driver to shift the transfer case in and out of neutral manually.
