oil pressure gage

Is there anyone out that has had trouble with the oil pressure gage when you stop at a signal it drops to zero and the red light comes on?

The combination of the 2 indicates you have no oil pressure at idle. There are several possible causes. Fist is oil dilution, usually with diesel fuel, low oil level, then it starts getting expensive. Oil pump has worn, excessive clearance somewhere in the engine.

How long since your last oil change? What oil is in the engine?

First thing is to install a new sending unit at engine. Then go deeper if that does not fix it. How many miles on engine? What engine?

The gauge and light use 2 different senders. To confirm the problem, put a mechanical gauge on the engine to verify the oil pressure.

My problem was dilution also, diesel fuel in the oil. My pressure was about 25 lbs and about 10 at idle. Just enough to keep the warning light off, But when I was trying to descend a 7 or 8% grade then engine brake couldn't hold the speed and I had to almost over heat my brakes to stay safe in the mountains. It turned out the ceramic pistons in the accumulator section of the injection pump were worn allowing diesel fuel to enter the engine lubrication circulatory system. $680.00 later at the Farmington, NM Cummins shop and I was back to Normal. 38 to 45 lbs of pressure at 195 degree coolant temp on the flat and level with 55 to 60 lbs of pressure at start up and descending steep grades with the engine brake functioning in 2nd or 3rd gear. You have an exhaust brake, so that part of my issue doesn't apply, but you need to get the unit examined yesterday, before you need and entire engine $$$$$$$$$.

We had a similar problem right after having the oil changed at Speedco. Pulled out and up the road and when we stopped to pull in the oil pressure dropped low enough to kill the engine. So, I know the oil was full, fresh and the correct weight and shouldn't be the problem. Picked up VMSPC and the pressure shows higher then the gauge but the gauge does drop when letting of the accelerator and the low oil light will flicker.
I am assuming it is the voltage or wiring to the gauge but have not had time to check it out yet but feel better being able to see the value on the VMSPC.

Any comments/suggestions welcome.

The gauges use a different sending unit which is less dependable than Cummins uses in it's ECM engines. If your engine is the electronic version than it's probably a bad sending unit as the engine would die if the ECM detected low pressure.
