Air Compressor Issue

Greetings All,

In response to the issue of carrying a CO2 tank to inflate tires, I did this for years with my previous motorhome (GMC) and the tank was a scuba tank. The same holds true for a CO2 tank, and they hold either 2250 psi or 3000 psi, depending on the tank. They work fine, but for the size and volume of our CC tires, they would need to be re-filled quite often. The other consideratin is that of safety, in that a highly pressurized tank can become a virtual bomb in the event of an accident or overheating or a failure of the valve. You would also need a regulator valve on the tank to reduce the ambient tank pressure to a workable fill pressure, or risk over-inflation of a tire from the (up to) 3000 pounds per square inch (psi) tank. I have been a scuba diver for over forty years and an instructor for twenty-five, and as such have first hand knowledge of this issue and have experienced a minor mishap that caused me to re-consider carrying that high pressure tank in my motorhome. I too, purchased a compressor from Harbor Freight that does the trick for me without the worry of a high pressure mishap. Just my two cents for what it's worth.

I stand corrected, and must admit that I am surprised to learn that the comments I posted with regard to the Powertank issue are outdated. I must eat crow here, as I have researched the issue and studied the website link provided on this forum. It seems the system they have designed is indeed a good alternative to using a compressor for filling our tires. The main concerns I had were those of safety, and the inconvenience of re-filling the cylinders, but it appears they have addressed both issues to a great extent by utilizing liquid CO2 and the availability of a variety of refill locations as listed on their website. I still think I will continue with my compressor for now, but I can certainly understand why, especially full-timers and those with storage challenges, would want to consider the Powertank as a viable alternative. Thanks to all for this forum, as it has once again provided a great solution to a problem by sharing the experience and knowledge of the group.
